OverviewA Substation Physical Design Engineer will join WSP's National Electrical Team in Alberta, with options in Saskatchewan or British Columbia. In this role, you will design medium and high‑voltage utility substations and renewable energy interconnections, applying industry codes and standards to produce reliable, innovative solutions.Key ResponsibilitiesLead detailed design of medium‑to‑high‑voltage utility substations, including one‑line diagrams, general arrangements, elevation views, conduit and cable routing, substation physical layouts, and ground grid layouts.Perform calculations for lightning protection, battery sizing, AC station service sizing, conduit/cable tray sizing, and other substation design parameters.Develop technical specifications and design criteria for substation projects.Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to meet project milestones and exceed client expectations.Occasional travel may be required.QualificationsBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology diploma.Five (5) to Ten (10) years of experience in utility substation design, covering 15kV through 138kV design and IEEE/ANSI standards.Proven ability to develop detailed physical substation designs from design basis memoranda or scopes of work with minimal oversight.Experience managing multiple concurrent projects, including brownfield and greenfield substations.Strong mentoring and teaching skills in a fast‑paced design environment.Professional engineer license (P.Eng) or P.L. (Eng.) is a plus.Experience designing 230kV through 500kV substations is a plus.Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer) or AutoCAD (2016 or newer) is a plus.Experience designing in BIM software (Inventor, P4A, Primtech) is an asset.Benefits and CultureWe value inclusion and belonging.
