Fire Protection Specialist

The Engineering Services Department is currently looking for a Fire Protection Specialist, regular full‑time permanent position to support a role at our Toronto location with a focus on the aviation industry. Our industry‑leading team of fire protection experts understands that Fire Protection Engineering is a multi‑disciplinary field. As such, we are looking to build a team of specialists of various focuses within the multi‑faceted fire protection industry. Your role Provides advice, guidance and subject matter expertise throughout the planning, design, and delivery of the program as it relates to fire and life safety systems design and construction, including compliance with all relevant codes and standards. Ensures that fire and life safety systems design and construction comply with technical requirements, including design reviews, submittal reviews, and testing. Conducts Facility Alteration Permit (FAP) compliance reviews for all proposed renovations, alterations, maintenance work and new construction. Supports the development of governance and process documentation with respect to a client's program practices for fire and life safety systems engineering. Assesses alternative compliance proposals submitted by third parties for client sites and provides feedback as to the feasibility of the proposal and alignment to client requirements. Coordinates the technical elements of the program with respect to fire and life safety systems engineering, including establishing targets/goals. Coordinates the interface between other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure integration and coordination across client programs, facilities, and assets. Reviews deliverables submitted by the contractor/designer and confirms compliance with relevant requirements, codes, and standards. Monitors the input of the third‑party designers throughout the construction phase (RFIs, shop drawings, material approvals, mock‑up approvals, punch list, etc.). Provides management‑level progress reports and briefings with respect to fire and life safety systems design progress, issues, and opportunities. Coaches, mentors, and supports career development of client staff members when required. Holds a degree from a recognized university engineering program or college diploma from an architectural, engineering technology or fire protection engineering technology program. Has a minimum of 7 years' experience in the design, construction, and commissioning of industrial and commercial building, mechanical, or fire and life safety systems within a major capital project/program. Experience of defining functional and technical specifications in line with business requirements and thorough working knowledge of requirements management. Knowledge of Building and Fire Codes, including referenced fire protection standards (UL, NFPA). Knowledge of agency jurisdictions and their roles within the airport. Has knowledge of ISO 55001 Asset Management (asset). Participation within fire protection industry associations is an asset. Ability to cross over multi‑disciplinary projects. Aviation experience is an asset. Good understanding of fire protection engineering concepts and methods. Collaborative approach and good communication skills. Good organizational skills.
