Job Summary The Capacity Engineer Senior Staff leads the team and collaborates with others to solve a variety of data‑center mechanical and design issues for installations within a moderate scope. The primary focus is the creation, interpretation, and distribution of CFD models and making recommendations for system‑level enhancements to eliminate potential cooling issues. Prior Knowledge 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering or related field with 10+ years in mission‑critical/data center environments. Mastery in vapor‑compression refrigeration cycle and its application in mechanical HVAC design. Expert level understanding of sensible and latent heat, including their associated thermodynamics equations. Proven expertise in chilled water systems, economizers, CRAH/CRAC units, ACUs/RTUs, IDECs, and Liquid Cooling. Expert in HVAC controls systems, including setpoint strategies, sequence of operations and control logic. Understanding of system redundancy and failure scenarios. Strong familiarity with ASHRAE guidelines and environmental regulations. Prior experience in Data Center mechanical engineering design or operations is preferred. Responsibilities Computational Fluid Dynamics Creates CFD models in support of sales activities, project justifications, and for troubleshooting thermal issues. Subject‑matter expert guiding others internally and externally. Assists team in reviewing models built by others and provides constructive feedback. Mechanical Engineering Evaluates mechanical design plans and identifies potential cooling limitations. Implements solutions to existing thermal management challenges. Develops datacenter floor zoning plans to ensure efficient infrastructure planning. Assists Capacity Engineers with assessment of high‑power density customer deployments. Reviews impact of containment walls and privacy screens on facility cooling performance. Completes Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) calculations for facilities with input from Capacity Engineers and Site Operations. Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification is a plus. Space Planning & Design Creates standard Cage‑Cabinet design options that respond to moderate customer requirements, Equinix requirements, and physical site constraints. Prepares notional Cage‑Cabinet layouts, area calculations, and diagrams for each standard data center. Maximizes space utilization to develop the best design solution for the data center and the customer. Engineering Attributes standard Cage‑Cabinet designs to electrical/mechanical infrastructure conceptually. Prepares high‑density review cases. Works with senior members in validating and updating data center infrastructure data within capacity systems. Problem Solving Solves standard, cross‑functional issues that span multiple groups. Identifies and understands underlying issues. Escalates appropriately. Data & Drawing Management Works with site operations to reconcile documentation of facility infrastructure and customer cage installations. Ensures AutoCAD drawings and capacity systems correctly represent existing status. Updates calculations for upgraded or new equipment installations. Mentorship & Collaboration Mentors and coaches engineers within the HVAC/mechanical discipline. Collaborates with teams to identify power/cooling issues affecting space capacity. Answers standard inventory questions from cross‑functional departments. Engages stakeholders to reach solutions within a moderate scope. Escalates dispute decisions to appropriate levels. Demonstrates strong communication, leadership, and multitasking skills. Capacity Feasibility & Optimization Works with Capacity and/or site engineers to identify power and cooling limitations, discuss potential modifications, and develop moderate solutions. Acts as backup point of contact for the capacity review process. Provides solutions for complex models requiring in‑depth mechanical and controls review. Qualifications Demonstrated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) experience, typically 7+ years. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Experience with CFD software, Cadence Reality DC/6Sigma Room preferred. Pay Range United States – Dallas Infomart Office DAI: $118,000 – $176,000 USD / Annual Canada – Toronto Office TRO: $94,000 – $142,000 CAD / Annual The targeted pay range shown is based on our compensation structure in place at the time of posting and may be updated periodically based on business needs.
