To ensure transparency and independence, the team is led by a civilian Director.For more information on SiRT please visit our site: https://sirtnsnb.caAbout Our OpportunityReporting to the Director and Assistant Director, the Team Commander will be part of a civilian-led team responsible for investigating incidents under the Nova Scotia Police Act and the New Brunswick Police Act. This includes incidents involving serious injury, death, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or matters in the public interest that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty.Primary AccountabilitiesUpon receiving an assignment, the Team Commander, in consultation with the Director and/or Assistant Director, will determine the resources and methodology required to carry out an efficient investigation, including the need to evaluate the demand for specialized assistance and support, and determine what evidence is required, and will lead the investigation, which can include directing a multi-agency team.Other AccountabilitiesGathers and analyses evidence in accordance with the prescribed rules of evidence and the law, with respect to recognized investigative procedures, and as directed by the operating procedures of SiRT.Prepares comprehensive reports of investigations and makes recommendations to the Director regarding actions taken relative to investigations.Organizes and produces disclosure information packages in accordance with standardized procedures and policies for court purposes, and provides all information obtained during the investigation to the Director.Appears as a witness and gives evidence during criminal trials, fatality inquiries/coroner’s inquests, or any other form of hearings (if required).Works with community and diverse communities when conducting investigations.Applies a trauma-informed approach to investigations.Travels when required throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.About YouTo be considered for this opportunity, you hold a Bachelor’s degree and minimum 5 years investigative experience at a senior level in the law enforcement field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. The requirements of this vacancy include:Formal training and experience in the major case management model and a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the methods and techniques involved in criminal investigations.Excellent knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada and other relevant federal or provincial statutes.Experience in preparing and presenting cases for the Court system, and knowledge of the rules of evidence as they relate to the collection and preservation of evidence.Experience working in an investigative function in an integrated or multi-agency environment, along with demonstrated supervisory and team-building skills, are a requirement for this position.A Team Commander must demonstrate good judgment, integrity, objectivity, tact, and strong ethical values. You must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and demonstrate understanding and sensitivity to the needs of all persons involved in the investigative process and to the public and its communities.Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.Candidates will be assessed for the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.Working ConditionsThis position may involve irregular working hours, including nighttime and weekend work; and considerable travel, at times during inclement weather. The position requires being available for an on-call rotation, and travel throughout New Brunswick, with the possibility of travel in Nova Scotia and PEI. The incumbent will be required to hold a valid driver’s license and pass all appropriate background clearance checks.Additional InformationThis is an Order in Council Appointment for a five-year term.
