The Mortgage Underwriter has responsibility for applying due diligence when reviewing required documentation to ensure accuracy and to protect the Company from risk.How you will contribute:Establishes and maintains positive relationships with mortgage brokers to build loyalty to the CompanyMaintains positive relationships with external partners such as mortgage insurers, appraisers, title insurance companies, and solicitorsAdjudicates mortgage applications within established authority limits while ensuring adherence to policies and guidelinesInteracts with Mortgage Insurers where applicable to complete credit lending decisionsEnsures due diligence has been completed prior to signing off on any mortgage conditions or documents, where applicablePrepares and issues mortgage commitments with appropriate conditions within established service level agreements/turnaround timesPriorities applications and workflow to ensure consistent and sound risk assessments are maintained while managing high volumes and a continued focus on service excellenceStays current with latest industry knowledge, competition, and market trendsSkills and Attributes:Ability to build and maintain positive relationshipsStrong communication skills—both written and verbalAbility to manage and resolve conflictStrong analytical skillsOrganizational and time management skillsPositive team player with desire and ability to mentor othersEffective problem solving and decision making skillsFully competent in working with basic PC software and working knowledge of the suite of Microsoft office productsAbility to manage pressure in an environment of high volume processing with tight turnaround timesAdhere to policies/procedures to ensure AML requirements are met.Education/Certification/Experience Requirements:Completed post-secondary education or equivalent work experience requiredMinimum 2 years previous mortgage underwriting experience requiredCompletion of Mortgage Agent Course and/or FICOM License an assetWorking knowledge of PC software in a Windows environment requiredIn accordance with the Financial Institutions Commission (FICOM), if a successful candidate is not already licensed, upon starting with First National, they will be registered for the applicable educational courses and upon successful completion of the exam, First National will register them with FICOM to complete the licensing process.Working Environment and Physical Demands Analysis:Periods of high volume with tight timelinesLong periods of stationary position/sittingProlonged periods of repetitive movement (i.e. using a keyboard and mouse)Long periods of time in viewing a computer screenMulti-tasking may include speaking to customers on a telephone call while looking up information on a computer program.Competitive CompensationComprehensive benefits program (i.e., Health Spending Account, Maternity and Parental Leave Top Up)Extensive training programs to set our employees up for successModern office environment conducive to collaborationSupportive teamwork cultureOpportunities to give back to the communities and work through events focused on a variety of charitiesOngoing social events throughout the yearThe team you’ll join:Founded in 1988, First National is one of Canada’s largest non-bank lenders.
