The Project Scientist / Project Technologist works closely with Project Managers to deliver a wide range of environmental health and safety services across Ontario. This includes Hazardous Building Materials, Indoor Air Quality, Mould, Remediation/Abatement, and Drinking Water Assessments, particularly in institutional settings such as schools. This role requires strong technical capability, self-direction, and flexibility to perform after-hours field work (evenings, nights, and weekends) when project schedules require access to occupied or restricted buildings. Primary Functions Perform hazardous materials, environmental, and drinking water assessments Execute fieldwork, sampling, and site investigations in accordance with regulatory protocols Coordinate with Project Managers, subcontractors, laboratories, and clients Support multiple concurrent projects while meeting timelines, budgets, and quality standards Conduct after-hours field work as required (e.g., school-based or occupied-building projects) Responsibilities Environmental & Hazardous Materials Assessments Complete all activities associated with: Asbestos Assessments Hazardous Building Materials Assessments (HBMA) Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Assessments Mould Assessments Remediation / Abatement Projects Drinking Water Assessments (e.g., lead and bacteria sampling) Field Work & Sampling Conduct site visits, field investigations, and observations Collect environmental and drinking water samples following prescribed protocols Maintain accurate chain of custody documentation Safely handle, transport, and submit samples to accredited laboratories Perform work in institutional environments, including schools, in compliance with site-specific requirements (e.g., security clearances) Project Coordination & Execution Self-organize and execute assigned tasks within defined timelines and budgets Schedule site visits, including evening, night, and weekend work as required Supervise contractors and coordinate subcontracted services (abatement contractors, labs, etc.) Coordinate with clients and subcontractors to ensure health and safety requirements are met Technical Analysis & Reporting Conduct historical reviews and regulatory research Review analytical results and site findings Assist with or prepare clear, accurate technical reports, including tables, figures, and drawings Draft technical summaries of findings for Project Manager review Collaborate with Project Managers to refine findings and develop recommendations for further investigation or remediation Educational and Experience Requirements Required Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in environmental science/technology/engineering or a related field 2-3 years of progressive environmental consulting or field experience in: Hazardous Building Materials Indoor Air Quality Mould Assessments Remediation / Abatement Projects Environmental or water sampling Working knowledge of Ontario and Canadian environmental regulations and standards Experience coordinating subcontractors or third-party consultants Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, with the ability to prepare and edit 2D drawings, diagrams, and figures to support field investigations and technical documentation Preferred Eligibility for registration as an environmental professional (EP) or a certified engineering technologist (CET), or other equivalent such as CRSP, WRT, AMRT, C-NRPP, etc. Drinking water sampling experience (lead, bacteria) On-site asbestos air sampling and PCM analysis Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, structural, plumbing, electrical) Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical reports Licensing & Other Requirements Valid driver’s license Access to a reliable personal vehicle with appropriate insurance Must have no criminal record (required for school board work) Willingness to travel throughout Ontario and occasionally within Canada Willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends as required Why work at RiskCheck?
