Rates Strategist

Futures First Canada is looking to grow their Research and Strategy Team in Montreal by hiring a Rates Strategist. We are looking for a high caliber candidate who can generate high conviction ideas in US and Canadian fixed income markets.This is an exciting and intellectually challenging role, and the strategist will get to work directly with the senior management of the firm, with the opportunity to collaborate with other analysts across the firm’s many offices. The role provides tremendous opportunity to grow, both in terms of experience as well as in terms of career progression.The ideal candidate will have a strong macro/quantitative background and a thorough understanding of how to analyze the fundamentals of government bonds, and short-term interest rate derivatives, and one who can present a quantitative approach to Rates research. Of particular interest will be candidates who already have some experience doing rates strategy or fixed income/macro research on the buy-side, sell side, brokers, research providers or central banks since a big part of the focus will be generating ideas around central bank policies, and related funding markets. While this is strongly preferred, we are open-minded about the specifics of the fit given the meritocratic nature of the firm.What will your day look like?Analyze macro-economic data, central bank policy framework & actions and broader market information (pricing and positioning) to inform views on fixed income derivativesCreate, maintain and update quantitative and qualitative economic, financial, or statistical databasesDesign systems/set-ups competent to generate actionable recommendations based on fundamental and market microstructure analysis, communicated via periodic publications, meetings and ad-hoc sessions.Enhance the knowledge base of existing Market Analysts, and training new recruits.Analyze exposure and risk for individual market analysts and the overall book.Since this is a highly competitive position, we will only respond to those candidates who meet the following criteriaExperience0-2 years’ experience as a Fixed Income (Rates) Strategist, Research Analyst, Risk Manager or Trader (swaps, cash or futures). This could be on the buy or sell side, brokerage, exchange, research provider or a central bank.EducationStrong academic background. For those without relevant experience, we require a Master’s from a highly ranked University with concentration in monetary/macroeconomics, quantitative finance, financial mathematics etc.SkillsFamiliarity with basics of interest rate products including government bonds, interest rate swaps, options, short-term interest rate futures etc. A working understanding of key macro & thematic drivers across other asset classes (FX/Commodities etc.) Understanding of Futures or Roll Analysis would be a plus, however not requiredStrong knowledge of economics and statistics. Proficiency with basic statistical techniques such as correlation, linear regressions, PCA etc.Excel or Python based modelling experience. Ability to apply AI/ML techniques to research would be a plus, but not mandatory. Experience with Bloomberg, Refinitiv, TT would be a plus.PersonalityBilingual – Excellent spoken and written French & English would be preferred.A team player with effective communication and interpersonal skills; self-starter and independent thinkerExcellent organizational and time management skills with an ability to prioritize effectivelyTiming and LocationWe are looking for someone to join us in January 2026 or as soon as possibleThis role is not remote. You must be able and eligible to work on-site in Montreal for the entire duration.
