Course number and title Ece496Y1 Y – Design Project Course description Ece496Y is a full‑year course required for all fourth‑year electrical and computer engineering students, allowing them to integrate the knowledge acquired over the first three years of study in the planning and execution of a project proposed either by the student or by a supervisor. One (1) position Estimated TA support N/A Estimated course enrolment 300 students Class schedule Students attend an introductory lecture and one or two subsequent lectures. Otherwise, students work in teams, meeting with their supervisors and administrators on an individually determined schedule. Sessional dates of appointment January 19, 2026 to April 30, 2026 Hours Up to 12 hours. Salary CUPE minimum salary rates are: Writing Instructor 1 – $55.46/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 1 Long Term – $59.62/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 – $59.62/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 Long Term – $61.05/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 (priority) – $61.38/hr plus 6% vacation pay and Writing Instructor 2 (priority) Long Term – $62.82/hr plus 6% vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail. Minimum qualifications Include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Preferred qualifications Include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), familiarity with engineering communication practices and/or training in second‑language instruction at the university level and/or experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice. Also considered assets are experience in curriculum development, tutoring and/or working with a diverse group of students. Description of duties In the winter term, up to eight writing instructors will attend Practice Oral Presentations. These will take place over two weeks from 7-9 PM on Tuesday or Thursday evenings in January. Writing instructors will be expected to deliver on‑the‑spot oral feedback and award a grade worth a small percentage. In addition to these sessions, there will be some time allotted for orientation meetings. Must have the ability to convert to different communication duties and move online if required.
