Xplore is looking for an individual to help evolve and support our fiber optic network, delivering increased value to our end customers. As part of the Backbone Network Engineering team, the Optical Network Designer will be responsible for the design and support of Xplore’s optical network and services. This position reports to the Manager, Backbone Engineering in Markham, Ontario. Key responsibilities include: Research new architectures, technologies, vendors and features Create and execute detailed lab test plans for new architectures, technologies, vendors and features Install the necessary hardware/cables to implement and maintain physical and logical network simulations in the Markham lab facility Architect and implement a best in class optical architecture maximizing performance for our customers and minimizing operational cost Define, implement and maintain optical transport hardware/software, standards and procedures Stay current with ITU‑T standards, industry best practices and emerging technology trends in optical transport technologies to meet anticipated network, business and customer needs Develop/recommend tools for measurement, analysis and optimization of network performance Work with colocation partners to create facilities specifications for new equipment installations and upgrades Create Engineering Work Orders (EWO), Methods of Procedure (MOP) and other Process documentation as required by the Operations team and NOC to install and operate new deployments Provide third level problem escalation support and participate in an On‑call rotation according to the schedule for after‑hours support Create documentation and provide training on the architecture, operations and troubleshooting of Xplore’s optical network Create optical network roadmap and expansion plans Prepare and deliver presentations for internal and external stakeholders The ideal candidate will possess: Engineering Degree (Electrical or Computer Science) is preferred Minimum 8 years of core optical network architecture and design experience in a service provider environment with a focus on fiber connectivity and optical transport Extensive knowledge of optical fiber delivery architectures and technologies with an in-depth understanding of the technical and budgetary implications and trade‑offs associated with design decisions made at all network layers In‑depth knowledge of optical standards and protocols, such as OTN (Optical Transport Network), xWDM, and SONET In‑depth knowledge with PON technologies, such as EPON, GPON, XGS‑PON and TDWM‑PON In‑depth understanding of fibre optic cable acceptance and characterization specifications and measurements In‑depth understanding of optical protocol processing, such as FEC (Forward Error Correction), multiplexing/de‑multiplexing, packet switching, amplification, dispersion, etc. In‑depth knowledge of optical networking equipment from vendors such as Cisco, Ciena, Ekinops, Adva Hands‑on experience on Ciena 6500, ADTRAN FSPR7 and CloudConnect Platform Experience with test equipment, such as OTDR, OSAs, vector analyzers, BERT, and similar equipment Knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP, Ethernet, and MPLS standards would be beneficial Good written and verbal English communication Attention to detail ensuring accurate network documentation and written standards are created for use by Network peers Proven ability to break down barriers and foster collaboration across functions and teams Willingness to challenge the status quo looking for new and innovative solutions to engineering problems Willingness to undertake occasional travel As a condition of employment and in order to comply with industry related data security standards, this position is subject to the successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
