The Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) Branch is dedicated to protecting Alberta’s environment by undertaking monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the environmental impacts from oil sands development activities. Role Responsibilities The Oil Sands Monitoring Branch seeks a highly qualified Junior Hydrogeologist to contribute to Alberta’s long-term groundwater monitoring, research, and reporting initiatives. This position will enhance the scientific capacity of the OSM Program in hydrogeology, groundwater management, and cumulative effects assessment. The Junior Hydrogeologist will apply advanced scientific methods to monitor, evaluate, and report on groundwater quality and quantity, supporting evidence‑based decision‑making for government, industry, and Indigenous communities. Key Responsibilities Contribute to the design and continuous improvement of groundwater monitoring programs, protocols, and conceptual models. Collaborate with Indigenous communities to support groundwater monitoring initiatives and address concerns. Develop annual and multi‑year monitoring plans, budgets, and innovative studies to assess groundwater conditions. Deliver groundwater monitoring programs including field investigations, design and supervision of monitoring well construction and installations, sampling, data validation, and analysis. Evaluate hydrogeological data independently and collaboratively, preparing technical reports, program reports, and manuscripts for peer‑reviewed publications. Apply hydrogeological modeling and advanced numerical/statistical analyses to assess local, regional, and cumulative impacts on groundwater resources. Support development of hydrogeological research programs that advance understanding of groundwater science in the oil sands region of Alberta. Develop, update, and author Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical guidance documents to support consistent implementation of groundwater monitoring and data management protocols. Review and provide technical feedback on reports and deliverables prepared by collaborators and partners on behalf of the OSM Groundwater Monitoring Program to ensure scientific accuracy, consistency, and alignment with program objectives. Qualifications Education: Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Contaminant Hydrogeology, Physical Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field. Experience: Minimum of 2 years of related experience in groundwater and contaminant hydrogeology, groundwater research, monitoring, and modelling. Equivalency: PhD in a scientific discipline related to the position; no experience required. OR university graduation in a related field plus 4 years of directly related experience. Other: A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent). Assets PhD with post‑doctoral experience. Proficiency in data evaluation and analysis software (Excel, MATLAB, R, Python). Expertise in drilling techniques, including monitoring and production wells. Experience using groundwater monitoring equipment and instruments. Knowledge of Alberta’s hydrostratigraphy and experience with groundwater modelling software such as FEFLOW, HYDROGEOSPHERE, AQTESOLVMODFLOW, ArcGIS, and QGIS. Strong technical writing skills for report preparation and data interpretation. Eligibility for registration as a Geoscientist‑in‑Training or Professional Geoscientist with APEGA is an asset. Notes This is a full‑time, permanent position based in Calgary, Alberta, with Edmonton considered as an alternative location. The role involves office and field work, frequent travel to remote locations in Alberta’s oil sands region, and may require extended field stays, physical tasks and operation of specialised field equipment. Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and seasonal peaks, may be required. The incumbent will cooperate with Indigenous communities, volunteers, and multidisciplinary teams, complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
