3 days ago Be among the first 25 applicants The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a safe workplace for HaiSea Marine employees. This is achieved through providing subject matter expertise to safety personnel, employees, supervisors, managers, customers and contractors on all aspects of occupational health and safety as well as on workplace hazards and high-risk activities. In addition, this role is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring compliance with safety-related policies and other administrative controls for the division and facilitation of a positive cultural and behavioural change in the workplace. This position is required to be fully on-site based at Kitimat, BC. What You'll Do Acts as the subject matter expert (SME) on all aspects of safety, health and in some cases environment, including the Seaspan ULC Safety Management System (development, delivery, implementation and monitoring), safety performance management, feedback and recognition processes, industrial hygiene and ergonomics. Provides expertise for the development of administrative controls in conjunction with the joint Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) committees to ensure that employer and employee safety needs are met. Continuous collaboration with management, safety and health committees, unionized employees, major customers and contractors for the company regarding proactive solutions to safety and health related problems. Provides expertise to ensure that the workplace meets all applicable occupational health and safety standards as required under the Canada Labour Code, Canadian Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, Marine Occupational Safety and Health Regulations as well as the provincial regulations (i.e. WorkSafeBC) and Seaspan corporate policies in alignment with client’s or charterer’s standards or requirements. Provides leadership and guidance to the ship Safety Officers and shore-based workers to ensure administrative controls developed and introduced to the workplace are being followed correctly by employees and are regularly under review to ensure ongoing effectiveness. Coordinates workplace audits and inspections (shore and shipboard) to evaluate compliance with regulatory standards, best practices and Seaspan ULC corporate policies. Provides recommendations for improvement and ensures that follow up processes are in place. Interfaces with the client regarding client-specific safety-related requirements, reporting and record keeping. Seeks to understand the safety culture and behaviours that drive how work is performed and managed in the workplace to determine appropriate safety protocols or controls. Educates, coaches and challenges workers and supervisors with respect to their roles and responsibilities in workplace health and safety. Monitors the training matrix to ensure workers and supervisors comply. When necessary, recommend and participate in the development of additional training for the workforce. Raises awareness about administrative controls domiciled in Compass among workers and supervisors. Assists the Seaspan learning and development, marine development and recruitment, and HR with other hands‑on occupational health and safety training and support as required onsite. Advises on how to modify or improve processes to better manage risks and hazards. This includes identifying and correcting situations that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH). Prepares reports on hazard recognition, evaluation and control based on analysis and interpretation of accident data and/or safety concerns. Serves as HSEQ SME for management and employees regarding hazard identification, and control especially unusual or high-risk work activities including entry into confined spaces, work requiring fall protection and working with equipment. Advises workers and supervisors on hazard recognition, hazard controls, subsequent risk and related safety matters. Investigates serious accidents/incidents to determine what happened (facts only), where it happened, how it happened and when it happened in the workplace. Conduct a root cause analysis (RCA) and provide recommendations on corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. Assigns corrective action responsibilities to individuals with completion timelines and conducts workplace inspections to ensure follow through. Provides support for the Emergency Response Team during and after major incidents. What You'll Bring Bachelor's Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Health & Safety, Ergonomics, Occupational Hygiene or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or an equivalent certification (such as CSP, ROH, or CIH) is preferred. Candidates currently working toward one of these designations will also be considered. A minimum of 5 years of occupational health and safety‑related experience in an industrial unionized setting. Experience in the marine transportation industry is an asset. Experience developing and implementing Safety Management Systems. Thorough knowledge of all applicable Federal and Provincial legislations regarding Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), Marine OH&S, plus any other relevant laws and regulations. Effective time management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills including understanding the accident phenomenon. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively transfer knowledge to a diverse group of learners. Must be able to work independently and initiate new ideas to challenge the status quo. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Must be able to coach, facilitate and influence a cultural and behavioural change in the workplace. Demonstrated capacity to work in a team, provide situational leadership and communicate effectively both in formal and informal settings. Strong computer word processing and spreadsheet skills. Ability to trend and analyze statistics and recommend improvements. Auditing skills, knowledge or experience, is recommended. Valid Class 5 drivers license required. The estimated salary for this position is $81,000 - $99,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
