Position Title Position Title: Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist Country: CA Type: 4 (Exempt, Bargaining Unit 1 (EB) # of Openings: 1 Category: Contract Administration & Enforcement/Representation - Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist Company Name: Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l., Canada Overview Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world seeks a Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist for our office in Eastern Canada. ALPA represents more than 80,000 pilots at 42 airlines in Canada and the United States. With minimal direction and within limitations of Association policy, the Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist handles a variety of labour relations assignments with a focus on scheduling and pilot work rules across Canada. They provide assistance to pilot governing bodies and to pilot committee members on many subjects that affect their employment, including time-sensitive airline projects, and provide strategic and technical scheduling support to a portfolio of ALPA Canada carriers. As such, they analyze and help strategize pilot scheduling and other work rules during negotiations and/or dispute resolution, provide analysis of pilot scheduling and other work rules for critical Association issues, testify as an expert witness in Association matters, assist both staff and external counsel with scheduling and pilot work rules issues in arbitration, and provide guidance and learning modules on such issues to Association and department staff. Their work involves considerable coordination, providing work rule and scheduling analyses to MEC officers, Committee members, and colleagues. The Sr. Scheduling Contract Specialist has a good understanding of each particular airline’s scheduling section(s) and supports Negotiating and Scheduling Committees as they seek to add or improve work rules. They serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on work rule and scheduling projects, including the applicable Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), while coordinating the development and production of related long-term projects. They also ensure quality standards are met on all deliverables under their portfolio of properties; establish and sustain effective relationships with pilot representatives, company counterparts, and ALPA staff; and, mentor and guide junior colleagues. This position involves significant individual responsibility, requiring good independent thought, instinct, and excellent judgment. Direct communication must be maintained with individual pilots, various pilot governing bodies, and other Association staff members. ALPA is a member-driven, staff supported, union with two internal professional unions. Travel 25 - 50%; sporadically 75%. Collective Bargaining Agreement This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in relevant area from an accredited college or university or the equivalent combination of education and experience required. Juris Doctor (JD), Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Master of Laws (LLM), or similar advanced degree from an approved school of law preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience. Five (5) or more years of relevant airline crew/scheduler experience required, ten (10) or more strongly preferred. In-depth working knowledge of pilot scheduling and work rules and airline operations required. Knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), especially Flight Time/Duty Time, and Transport Canada (TC) regulations required. Proficiency in use and understanding of scheduling software packages, e.g., Preferential Bidding Systems (PBS), Crew Tracking, scheduling optimizer, and their applicability in negotiations strongly preferred. Labour law, arbitration, and collective bargaining experience strongly preferred. Solid understanding of all aspects of pilot contracts and airline corporate practices strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff; external contacts; senior legal and aviation professionals; and, pilots. Analytical/problem-solving skills to quickly reduce a problem to its key components and to develop unique solutions. Technical writing and presentation skills to communicate effectively with pilot groups, Association Executives, and airline management. Strong time management skills; able to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; and, transition easily between projects.
