Steele’s is an asset-based business using a mix of company-owned assets and owner-operator equipment, with carrier partners to provide safe, timely, and competitive freight delivery throughout Alberta. The main service corridor is Calgary – Red Deer – Edmonton, with staff and/or drivers in these major cities. Job Title Operations Supervisor Job Responsibilities Supervising Dock Operations and overseeing the work of staff engaged in shipping, receiving, scheduling transportation, routes, and related activities. Scheduling daily dock tasks and establishing task priority. Collaborating with Sales and Operations to source cross-dock customers and grow annual recurring cross-dock revenue. Coordinating with dispatch to secure empty trailers and maintain a smooth flow of trailers in and out of docks. Ensuring freight originating at the terminal has dimensions captured and maintaining weekly DIMS compliance metrics. Ensuring compliance across all manifesting functions (inbound and outbound) at the dock level. Prioritizing unloading/loading, and properly handling damaged freight and returns. Identifying risks and problems and working with stakeholders to resolve them promptly. Fleet Management: monitoring fleet activities in the ELD dashboard and fleet management system to identify issues, maintenance, and inspections. Coaching drivers on HOS and DVIR to ensure 100% compliance; visually inspecting assets; keeping records of trailers in use and locations; coordinating repairs with approved vendors. Monitoring fleet mileage, safe miles driven, revenue, and cost per KM. Driver Team & Relations: enforcing activities and ensuring compliance with drivers and equipment; completing qualification and training of new drivers; coordinating ongoing monthly training. Support dispatch on driver issues and maintain Health, Safety & Compliance policies; collaborate on HSE initiatives; ensure compliance with safety policies and regulations. Investigate and resolve incidents and accidents involving people, vehicles, equipment, and freight claims (OS&D). People Management: supervise dock workers (employees and contractors) and provide daily guidance to achieve operational objectives. Foster cross-functional communications to keep relevant parties informed of solutions and actions for safe, timely operations. Reporting: track monthly performance stats for the dock, complete daily activity logs, and report daily dock audits and cross-dock revenue. Other duties as required, including heavy lifting or load transfers by hand and forklift work as needed to support daily dock operations. Qualifications/Skills 5+ years of experience in a terminal setting within the transportation industry. Transportation of Dangerous Goods training; forklift certified; WHMIS certified. Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and customer-service skills. Problem-solving ability, customer- and sales-oriented mindset, and multitasking capability. Safety-oriented with knowledge of National Safety Code and provincial transportation rules and regulations. Proficient in English (written and spoken); additional languages are an asset. Self-motivated, task-oriented, and capable of leading a team of front-line employees and drivers. Experience with TMS/WMS systems is an asset; proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience developing and managing an annual operating budget. Education and Experience Requirements Graduate/post-secondary education or a combination of education and experience; minimum secondary education. Previous transportation or operational experience is preferred; experience in related roles within transportation is beneficial. Experience leading a team of front-line employees and drivers.
