Job Description The Opportunity Our Resources subsector, a key component of WSP’s ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector, supports clients from coast to coast. This division provides a full range of services to industrial and mining projects, including all services offered in the field of engineering from conceptual and feasibility studies to complete detailed engineering in EPCM, to the closure and dismantling of mine sites. To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking a Lead Layout Designer to join our Mechanical Team, located in any of our Canadian offices – Etobicoke, Mississauga, Thornhill, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and/or Saskatoon, SK are preferred. This position will play a key role in leading the design and optimization in the layout design of heavy industrial projects across the subsector. The successful candidate will have experience leading teams and hands on experience with preparing 3D models and layout arrangements for plant upgrades and new facilities, reviewing drawings and designs, developing process diagrams, site plans through to detail, resource managing and client management. This role involves close collaboration with different disciplines as well as clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination. What you can expect to do here You Will Prepare 3D models and layout general arrangements for existing plant upgrades and new facilities Review vendor drawings to ensure conformity with engineering designs prior to fabrication Prepare design calculations and design briefs Prepare design sketches Conduct trade-off studies and prepare reports Participate in field engineering assignments Review all design work related to layout general arrangements and equipment model development Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure timely and accurate flow of design information while maintaining departmental and client standards Maintain and revise equipment libraries, department standards, and procedures Attend model reviews Prepare man-hour estimates Determine layout staffing requirements for projects Manage large groups of designers on a project, including assigning work to staff Participate in project cost estimatesDevelop and recommend improvements in design standards to reduce costs, improve quality, and facilitate plant maintenance Provide technical guidance and leadership to layout project staff Ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and quality of all layout deliverables and activities on a project Prepare layout technical quality audits across multiple projects What you’ll bring to WSP College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent 15+ years experience in mechanical engineering design specifically with experience in layout design for heavy industrial and/or mining projects 2+ years experience in a team lead role Strong understanding of mechanical equipment installation requirements in the field Must have consulting experience Proven experience with Plant3D, Revit, Microstation, SolidEdge and SmartPlant Strong communication skills (written and verbal) French language skills (written and verbal) an asset Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a desire to perform design engineering Strong leadership and management skills Strong critical thinking skills and an ability to problem solve effectively About Us WSP is one of the world’s leading professional services firms.
