OverviewThe primary role of the Vascular Sonographer is delivery of diagnostic testing services to both in-patients and ambulatory clients. The position requires performing a full range of arterial and venous ultrasound studies and physiologic tests, obtaining appropriate clinical history for each study, and interpreting and documenting results in collaboration with referring physicians and vascular surgeons.The role emphasizes interprofessional teamwork, education and support for staff and learners, ongoing professional development, and participation in quality improvement to provide optimal patient care.ResponsibilitiesDeliver diagnostic testing services to in-patients and ambulatory clientsPerform a full range of arterial and venous ultrasound studies and physiologic tests dailyObtain clinical history for all studies and analyze with existing patient information to select the most appropriate study protocolInterpret and document urgent and non-urgent results, provide preliminary reports, and consult with referring physicians and/or vascular surgeonsWork effectively as a member of an interprofessional team, collaborating with other disciplines to provide comprehensive patient careContribute to the academic mandate of the organization as an educator, resource or support for staff, students and members of the academic and professional communityIdentify and address educational needs for patients and their familiesDemonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development to continually provide optimal patient careParticipate in ongoing quality improvement within the organizationProvide patient care in accordance with all professional and organizational standardsQualificationsCurrent registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) requiredCurrent registration as a Sonographer with Sonography Canada and/or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) requiredRegistered as a Canadian Registered Vascular Sonographer (CRVS) with Sonography Canada and/or a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) with ARDMS required - if not held at time of hire/transfer, must be willing to complete the course and associated registration within 8 months of hire/transferCurrent CPR certification requiredKnowledge of anatomy, hemodynamics, physiology and pathophysiology to generate an accurate and comprehensive diagnostic reportRecent duplex scanning experience preferredDemonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsProven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environmentExcellent time management, organizational and prioritization skillsDemonstrated commitment to and involvement with own profession (e.g., attending rounds and conferences)Unity Health Toronto is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive organization.
