Assistant Theatre Technician

Job Description Working with the Town of Newmarket’s Recreation and Culture Team presents an opportunity to make a difference and connect with the community. You will be involved in delivering high‑quality programs, events, and services in Recreation, gaining valuable experience and learning new skills. The role requires dedication, teamwork and a passion for delivering outstanding performance support. Responsibilities Operates and maintains all theatre equipment, including repairs, service, load‑ins and load‑outs. Opens, operates, and oversees the operation of equipment for productions as required. Sets up and operates rental equipment when necessary; provides technical support to theatre users. Responds to enquiries, questions, concerns or complaints from user groups, the general public and staff, and refers to appropriate staff when needed. Leads technical aspects of a production during shift. May be required to attend special events at various locations. Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives. Job Requirements Post‑secondary coursework in technical theatre or equivalent education/experience such as radio/TV production or audiovisual training. Current holder of First Aid and CPR certification. Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing and reliable vehicle for corporate business. Willingness to obtain a Canadian Fireworks Operator certificate at the Pyrotechnician level. Working knowledge of health and safety guidelines as set out in the “Safety Guidelines for the Live Performance Industry in Ontario.” Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and communication skills. Ability to work under pressure and with tight deadlines. Good understanding of the production process and theatre production techniques. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, the general public, user groups and volunteers. Significant experience with computers, including Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, specialized sound/lighting control programs and computerized lighting/sound control consoles (e.g., Show Cue System, ETC ION, Element, Nomad lighting control, Digico SD9, Beringher X32 Audio Consoles). Experience in the operation and maintenance of automated lighting fixtures. Experience maintaining theatre equipment and managing detailed repair logs. Availability and flexibility to work weekdays, evenings, weekends and special events. Certifications Certifications are not required at the time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.
