Sessional Instructor: Materials and Methods, Faculty of Design, Fall/Winter 2025-26 Join the Faculty of Design at OCAD University as a Sessional Instructor for the course ENVR-1003: Materials and Methods (0.5 credit). The course will run during the Winter 2025-26 academic year from January 8th to April 8th, 2026, Fridays 3:10‑6:10 pm, in person. Course description Materials and Methods introduces students to the materials of wood and metal and the working methods and properties associated with them. Students will explore material properties, characteristics and appropriateness for specific design outcomes. They will also develop familiarity with workshop protocols, health‑and‑safety procedures and basic hand and machine tools. Responsibilities Teaching and teaching‑related duties may include, but are not limited to: developing a course outline, preparing and delivering studio sessions inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid‑term evaluations, and final evaluations/reviews; ensuring health & safety compliance; meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines. Qualifications A current body of work within the professional design and/or academic disciplines relating to the course description, specializing in metal materials and methods. Experience with, and aptitude for, highly iterative, process‑oriented work without fixed outcomes or expectations. A demonstrated capacity to support design research and design‑as‑research in qualitative and quantitative approaches. An asset: two (2) years of undergraduate teaching experience in a related Design discipline. Demonstrated leadership and experience in promoting a respectful and inclusive learning environment for students, staff, and faculty. Additional skills considered an asset Proficiency in CAD, Revit, SketchUp, Photoshop and MS Office. Proficiency in technical drawings and detailing. Strong knowledge of residential, commercial and/or institutional construction methodologies, building assemblies, materials application. Experience in a variety of building types including commercial, residential, institutional, retail, healthcare or hospitality. Experience working with the non‑profit sector and public sector clients including education institutions, municipalities and housing providers. Knowledge and expertise in historic, traditional and emerging sustainable practices (e.g., mass timber). Terms of employment Sessional appointments are fixed‑term annual contracts. Compensation is a per‑course pay scale of $7,508.00 per 0.5‑credit course plus 7 % in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
