Position Summary An Anesthesia Assistant (AA) is a Registered Respiratory Therapist or a Registered Nurse who holds a Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant Certification from a Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapy (CSRT) accredited school. They work in collaboration and under the supervision of an Anesthesiologist to provide anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. They are responsible for monitoring stable anesthetized patients under the direction of the Anesthesiologist as well as ensuring patient safety and comfort before, during, and after surgery. They will assist the Anesthesiologist in administering anesthesia, monitoring patients' vital signs, evaluating and monitoring patients' cardiorespiratory conditions. The AA is a collaborative team member, working alongside the nursing team to meet the needs of the patients who are under the care of an anesthesiologist. Primary Responsibilities Assist in the patient's care during induction by administering prescribed anesthetic agents as directed by the Anesthesiologist and/or through medical directives, monitoring for side effects and treatment effectiveness, and assessing the patient’s physiological condition throughout the anesthesia process. Provide diagnostic data to the Anesthesiologist or Surgeon, including blood gases, pulse oximetry, transcutaneous monitoring, and end tidal Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Support the preparation of the patient for surgery by completing the pre-operative assessment, inserting necessary lines and tubes (such as intravenous, nasogastric and endotracheal), and ensuring proper patient positioning. Ensure appropriate performance and maintenance of anesthesia related equipment. Assisting and monitoring patients in an anesthesia block room. Mandatory Qualifications Advanced Diploma in Respiratory Therapy or an Undergraduate degree in Nursing plus a current certification as a Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant required. Registered and in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario or the College of Nurses of Ontario required. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred. Current Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred. Minimum 2 years current experience in the Anesthesia Assistant role in operating room required. 3-5 years experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registered Nurse in a Critical Care/Emergency department or Operating Room. Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively across all levels of the organization. Criminal Record Check required.
