This role is for someone who is passionate about building innovative solutions and being exposed to new challenges and technologies while making an impact.This role is available to candidates across Canada and the US. If you are local to one of our hubs (Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto) you will be expected to be in office minimum twice per week on one of our Anchor Days.The Staff Software Developer, Databases will be responsible for discovering, triaging, and solving difficult performance and scalability problems in Clio's core applications and databases. They will primarily be iterating and evolving our infrastructure, data schema, application code, and products in order to solve complicated scalability issues with a goal of achieving high performance, high scalability, and exceptional reliability. By engaging across the organization, you'll help drive our current and future architecture and teach our engineering teams how to implement scalable patterns, particularly at the RDBMS layer.Note: MySQL experience is a requirement in this role.We're building a distributed team that forms the foundation of Clio's engineering organization:We build, secure, and maintain the infrastructure and critical services that power Clio’s core applications.We help Clions make data-driven decisions by providing observability and transparency for all of our environments.We collaborate with the Clio product development teams to build tools that improve workflows and remove manual labour or friction points.What you'll work on:You’ll be responsible for preparing Clio’s database infrastructure for the future in terms of scale and reliabilityYou will collaboratively define the roadmap to support business goals, and satisfy application requirementsYou will investigate and solve performance problems with our MySQL databasesWork on transitioning, maintaining, and modernizing our database infrastructure, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalabilityYou will use your experience to guide development teams on how to improve and optimize database queries, integrate best practices for schema design and migrationYou will scope, define, and collaborate with developers to implement automation and processes that power reliability of Clio’s datastoresParticipate in architectural discussions to help shape the future direction of our backend servicesYou'll raise the bar by spreading database knowledge to your team;Elevate and educate our engineering processes within ClioWhat you may have:You are equally energized by both your own technical work as well as contributing to the career growth of your teamYou have strong opinions that are weakly held, and foster that same attitude in othersYou challenge and enable your team to take initiative, explore, and implement new improvements while balancing that work against satisfying the requirements as defined by the businessYou believe in providing honest, actionable feedback to your team, and encourage your team to reciprocateYou devise roadmaps to guide the future of our datastores infrastructure in terms of scale and data securityWhat you should have:Hands-on technical expertise with building and configuring MySQL database servers; Bonus points for understanding how to do this in a cloud environmentExperience investigating and solving performance problems with MySQL databasesSolid understanding of database design, data modeling, and schema managementFamiliarity with SQL optimization techniques and best practices.Experience using ProxySQL and the percona toolkitBe prepared to work with and develop the MySQL knowledge to rest of the SRE teamA portfolio of successful projects (as well as a collection of lessons learned from failed projects)Don’t have all of those? Additionally, benefit offerings may differ depending on the employee's location.We aim to hire all candidates between the minimum and the midpoint of the full salary range. We reserve the midpoint to the maximum of the salary band for internal employees who demonstrate sustained high performance and impact at Clio. The final offer amount for this role will be dependent on individual experience and skillset of the candidate.
