Job Description This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at the North Campus in Edmonton. We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic professional to join our team as a Regional Manager, with primary responsibility for the USA and Oceania portfolios. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Global and Enterprise Partnerships plays a key role in advancing the University of Alberta’s international priorities by leading the development and delivery of regionally focused strategies, work plans, and initiatives aligned with the University’s strategic plans. As the University’s primary relationship lead in their region, the Regional Manager brings deep regional knowledge and insight to build, manage, and steward high-value institutional partnerships across government, academia, and industry. The role focuses on identifying and assessing strategic opportunities, supporting revenue-generating initiatives, strengthening international student recruitment through partnerships, and advancing international engagement that contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through this work, the Regional Manager helps enhance the University of Alberta’s global profile and reputation, while providing transparent reporting and evaluation of regional activities to inform decision-making and demonstrate impact. Responsibilities Shape International Strategy As a key member of the University’s global engagement efforts, you will lead the development and advancement of a regional international strategy that supports the University of Alberta’s broader institutional goals. You’ll provide strategic vision and practical guidance, translating institutional priorities into region-specific plans, initiatives, and partnerships. You’ll stay informed on emerging trends in higher education, research, innovation, industry, and geopolitics within your assigned region, using this insight to identify opportunities, assess risks, and inform senior leadership decision-making. This includes conducting environmental scans, synthesizing data and stakeholder input, and preparing clear, actionable reports for academic and administrative leaders across the University. Build and Steward Key Relationships You will play a central role in developing, managing, and stewarding institutional relationships across your region. Working collaboratively with senior University leaders and campus partners, you’ll help shape and support partnerships that advance priorities such as student recruitment, research collaboration, revenue generation, and long-term sustainability. This role requires strong diplomacy and adaptability, as you cultivate relationships with governments, academic institutions, industry partners, foundations, and non-governmental organizations. You’ll also support and negotiate international agreements, working closely with internal stakeholders and the International Agreements team. Lead International Events and Visits You will lead the planning and delivery of institutional-level international events and visits connected to your region. This includes supporting senior leaders, faculty, and college representatives as they engage internationally to advance strategic objectives. As a trusted advisor, you’ll provide guidance on protocol and intercultural communication, ensuring that international engagements are thoughtful, practical, and aligned with the University’s values and reputation. Reporting and Knowledge Management You’ll ensure that regional and country profiles, partner records, and international activity data are accurate and up to date. Working closely with colleagues in Global Engagement, you’ll maintain comprehensive records of partnerships and engagements, and provide regular reporting on activities, outcomes, and emerging opportunities. Qualifications What You Will Bring An undergraduate degree in a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.At least five years of relevant international experience, ideally in business development or partnership-focused roles, preferably within a post-secondary environment.Relevant experience in strategy development and strategic engagement plans for large organizations.Knowledge of the Canadian post-secondary sector and higher education systems in the assigned region.Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentations to senior and external audiences.Advanced intercultural competence and the ability to work effectively across cultural contexts.Strong research, analytical, and writing skills, with experience preparing strategic briefing materials for senior leaders.Demonstrated project development and management experience, including leading overseas missions and complex international logistics.Fluency in the regional language is required.Excellent problem-solving, critical‑thinking, and crisis communication skills.Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently or collaboratively in fast‑paced, ambiguous environments.Work and/or study experience in the region is an asset.Strong computer literacy, including proficiency with word processing, databases, and internet‑based research tools.
