Section Urban Forestry Natural Environment HorticultureJob Grade PT Student Grade 02Rate of Pay $18.60- $19.10HourlyJob Type Temporary Full Time - ContractContract Length/End Date May 4th to Aug. 28th 2026Replacement/New Position New VacancyPosting Type Internal and ExternalPosting Date 12/19/2025Application Deadline 05/31/2026Position SummaryReporting to the Supervisors of Public Works Operations, the Outside Summer Student will be responsible for the following:Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesParks:Grounds maintenance, including litter collection, mowing, and trimming/edgingSports field maintenance, including line marking, turf cutting, and minor repairs to field amenities and equipment (e.g., goals, benches, fences, dugouts, etc.)Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic sheltersHorticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displaysOperate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truckArboriculture operations including small and large tree careOther duties as assignedEnergy and WasteLitter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parksProviding support for special events including delivery, set up, takedown, clean-upOther duties as assignedWater/RoadsWater Department- Traffic Control, Data Collection, Painting Fire Hydrants, Cleaning and maintenanceAssist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair road and water infrastructureOther duties as assignedEducation and ExperienceBe currently enrolled in a college or university as a full-time student and returning to school full time for the fall semesterRequired Skills/KnowledgeDemonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and servicePrevious experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an assetAbility to understand and carry out verbal and written instructionsGood interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environmentAbility to deal with the public courteously and effectivelyMust possess Green Patch CSA approved 8" safety bootsOntario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)Ontario Class "G2" Driver's License may be consideredBe able to work outdoors during all weather conditions and available to work 7 days a week including holidaysDemonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisionsShows commitment to personal growth, development, and leadership opportunitiesShares new ideas and challenges the status quoProven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with honesty, openness, respect, and trustTakes initiative to participate in a culture of learning, mentoring, and sharingContributes to building and being a part of a positive cultureDemonstrates personal leadershipBuilds people and cultureCultivates open communicationShapes the futureNavigates and leads through complexity and changeWe thank all candidates for their interest, however, only those under consideration will be contacted.The City of Richmond Hill is committed to inclusive, barrier-free recruitment and selection processes.
