Overview Position: Security Ambassador Site: Mount Sinai Hospital – 600 University Ave, Toronto Category: Averaging Agreement – Overtime is Averaging Agreement (AA) after 88 hours Hours: Continental Rotation – 0700-1900 / 1900-0700 Payrate: $27.05 Successful candidates will attend mandatory 4‑day in‑class certification for MOAB and Use of Force at our Etobicoke office. A valid immunization record (Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and TB skin tests 1 and 2) is required prior to onboarding. Job Description As a 12‑hour shift ambassador, you will support the Emergency Department clinical team by proactively identifying potential violence and intervening early to reduce escalation. Duties & Responsibilities Monitor and patrol ED waiting areas, engaging patients, visitors, and staff to build a positive safety culture. Use supportive verbal techniques and engage staff resources for de‑escalation of potentially violent behavior. Develop relationships with clinical and operational stakeholders (Triage, Admitting, Nursing, Social Work, Security, volunteers) to ensure effective communication and support strategies. Act as principal contact for security services within the ED and liaise with emergency responders and law enforcement when managing individuals who may pose a risk of violence. Observe and report any obvious changes to patient health (loss of consciousness, dizziness, labored breathing, unresponsiveness) to clinical staff immediately. Conduct and document an hourly census of persons in the waiting areas. Identify available support options (warm blankets, food & drink, transit passes, community resources) and liaise with staff to ensure appropriate use that does not conflict with clinical needs. Develop personalized “Approach Plans” for regular patients and visitors who present a potential risk of violence, in partnership with stakeholders. Engage site security or Code White team for physically aggressive or threatening behavior; avoid direct physical intervention unless necessary for safety. Participate in multidisciplinary stakeholder briefings and provide input into patient behavior management planning. Skills & Abilities Sound judgment, effective interpersonal skills, and capability to manage hostile or aggressive behavior. Empathetic approach in high‑stress and conflict situations. Knowledge of applicable legislation, including the Criminal Code of Canada. Physical ability to carry out job duties. Prerequisites Legally authorized to work in Canada full‑time. Valid security license for Ontario. Valid First Aid & CPR – Level C (WSIB‑approved vendor). Proof of Covid vaccine (two doses).
