As a Senior Specialist, Environment at Capital Power, you will have a crucial role in ensuring our operating sites in Ontario maintain the highest environmental standards.Reporting to the Plant Management, the Senior Specialist, Environment is accountable for ensuring all units within their area of responsibility are aware of, and in compliance with, all applicable environmental legislation and regulations, internal Capital Power policies and reporting requirements.You will contribute to our team by:Providing environmental advice, coaching expertise, guidance, leadership, and support to all levels of the organization.Interpreting, implementing and ensuring consistent application of internal environmental standards and compliance with environmental regulations, permits and approvals.Managing data for all environmental reporting including for applicable air, water and waste as required by permits and regulation.Coordinating and providing guidance to meet all stack testing requirements (RATA’s, CGA’s and all other stack testing required by applicable permits).Supporting all environmental requirements associated with Spill Prevention, Control, and Counter Measure Plan (SPCC) and emergency response plans.Developing and maintaining documentation of site-specific environmental procedures in alignment with the Environment, Health and Safety Management System.Facilitating the provision of environmental, health and safety training as required to facility operations and management teams.Preparing environmental permit amendments or renewals as required.Provides routine administrative health and safety support as required.Supporting the management of follow-up on environmental, health and safety incidents to ensure proper notification to regulatory authorities, root-cause analysis, and resolution.Following up on environmental, health and safety audit issues to assist with action plan and to ensure adequate resolution.What you will bring to the role:Education:Completed University degree in Engineering or Natural/General Sciences or Technical degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent.Education equivalency may be considered.Experience & Skills:Minimum 5 years related experience.Strong understanding of environmental legislation, laws, and regulations, and the ability to gather updates and changes.Thorough understanding of environmental policy, environmental aspects, and environmental, health and safety management systems.Thorough understanding of CEMS and reporting requirements.Occupational Health and Safety experience is considered an asset.Experience writing technical reports, including details with respect to environmental laws and regulations.Good understanding of power operations or industrial facilities and associated environmental risk.Strong data management and Excel experience.Strong regulatory application skills to prepare approval amendments and explanation letters to government authorities.Working Conditions:Heavy industrial facility designated as a safety sensitive location. Physical mobility and ability to use PPE required.Although the position is based at the Goreway Power Station, the position may be required to travel to provide environmental support to other Ontario based Capital Power facilities and projects as required.Travel expectations may also include the potential for occasional travel to Corporate Office in Edmonton.Potential for infrequent after hour calls as part of incident or emergency notification process.Additional Details:As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug & alcohol test is required, subject to applicable law.In order to be considered for this role you must be legally eligible to work in Canada.The successful candidate for this position will undergo an education verification, reference checks and criminal record check.We believe that creating a culture that supports employee physical, mental, financial, and social wellbeing is critical to our success.
