Ballard has an immediate opening for an Electrical Engineer to join the Systems Engineering Team. The successful candidate will work well with existing engineering staff, is capable of independent work, and will contribute to the development of Ballard’s fuel cell system products.

  1. Perform design, packaging and verification of electrical systems
  2. Design and validation of wire harnesses
  3. Select and source electrical components (sensors, controllers, converters/inverters, PCBA, contactors, transformers, etc.)
  4. Develop component design requirements from system requirements
  5. Design prototype components and subsystems
  6. Verify designs through analysis and testing
  7. Troubleshooting/resolution of existing electrical components and systems
  8. Assist in preparation of technical documents, including test procedures, test reports, design specifications, and component/system design requirements
  9. Prepare and/or review technical drawings
Requirements:
  1. Must have a technical diploma or engineering degree from an Electrical / Electronics / Mechatronics program
  2. Must have at least 4 years’ experience in an electrical engineering field; ideally related to product development
  3. Experience designing, drawing, analyzing low voltage analog & digital circuits
  4. Experience with analog/digital inputs and outputs for managing sensors and actuators within a system
  5. Understanding of Controller Area Networks (CAN)
  6. Ability to read Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
  7. Troubleshooting skills with DMM, Oscilloscope, Insulation Tester, High-Potential Testers, and Ground/Bond Testers
  8. Basic electrical prototyping skills including: bread-boarding, soldering through-hole and surface-mount components
  9. Basic skill with mechanical prototyping tools such as drills, grinders, wrenches
  10. Demonstrated capability for critical thinking
  11. Excellent time management and organizational skills
  12. Strong oral and written communication skills and good listening skills
  13. Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment
Additional Consideration:
  1. Experience and interest in PCB design and Altium software
  2. Knowledge of fuel cell technology
  3. Experience in automotive or mobile equipment design
  4. Ability to create Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
  5. Experience with PLCs, Alarm Lists, and creation of I/O drawings
  6. Experience with instrumentation including pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices
  7. Experience with microcontroller programming
  8. Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and/or National Electrical Code or European IEC standards
  9. Experience/proficiency in automation and machine communication

The typical hiring range for this position is CAD$75,000 - CAD$ 93,000 per annum. As part of our total rewards offering, permanent employees in this position may be eligible for our competitive annual short-term and long-term bonus program, subject to program eligibility requirements.
