OverviewAssistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Engineering Communication, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, University of Toronto, St. George campus (Downtown Toronto). One position will focus on supporting second language learners, including developing and delivering language diagnostics, ongoing curricular language support, and co-curricular programs for professional language development. This search aligns with the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and invites applicants from Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities to apply.ResponsibilitiesTeach in multiple courses and programs within the Engineering Communication Program and ISTEP, contributing to the mandate to integrate communication across the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering’s core undergraduate curricula.Integrate instruction of written, oral, and visual communication principles within STEM/engineering design projects and curricula, with a strong foundation in engineering communication theory and pedagogy.Develop and deliver courses and materials for general and targeted student populations, including language diagnostics and curricular language support for second language learners.Engage in teaching-related scholarly activities and pedagogical inquiry, including the development of online materials/lectures and curriculum development.Demonstrate experience with lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and the production of online content in degree-granting programs.Contribute to professional communities of practice related to communication-integrated teaching and learning, and writing in the disciplines.Show commitment to EDI through pedagogy, outreach, mentorship, and other activities; provide evidence via teaching dossiers, awards, conferences, and reference letters.QualificationsA PhD in engineering or technical communication or a related field (e.g., English, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric, Engineering Education) by appointment or shortly thereafter, and demonstrated excellence in teaching.Teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and online material development.Demonstrated commitment to pedagogical inquiry and teaching-related scholarship, with ability to integrate written, oral, and visual communication in engineering contexts.Experience with multilingual student support, graduate-level writing/communication instruction (e.g., proposals, research articles, theses) is an asset.Interest in transdisciplinary competencies (team skills, leadership, ethics, equity, lifelong learning) and CEAB attributes; experience teaching communication to mature technology professionals is an asset.Application ProcessSubmit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, and a complete teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, teaching evaluations, and an EDI statement.Provide evidence of teaching excellence and mentoring, and a statement of past and proposed future pedagogical scholarship with a five- to ten-year horizon (two to five pages).Provide the names and contact information of three references (references may be solicited automatically by the University’s recruiting tool).
