AWC’s mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by:

Operations - delivering effective large-scale land management including fire management, feral animal control, weed control and infrastructure management.

Science - delivering a nationally-coherent program of ecological surveys with a focus on monitoring key conservation assets and threats, conducting applied research relevant to wildlife conservation, implementing conservation programs including reintroductions, and providing advice on land management.

Fundraising - mobilising finance (primarily, tax deductible donations) from the general public and philanthropists including through effective communication of AWC conservation programs.

Job Description

The Australian Wildlife Conservancy is seeking a dedicated Fire Officer to join our team in Broome, within the Operations | Kimberley department. This is a contract position that offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation of Australia's unique wildlife and ecosystems. As a Fire Officer, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing fire management plans to mitigate the impact of wildfires on AWC reserves in the Kimberley region.
  • Conducting regular assessments of fire risks and fuel loads across AWC properties, and recommending appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Providing training and guidance to AWC staff and volunteers on fire management techniques, safety protocols, and emergency response procedures.
  • Collaborating with external stakeholders, including government agencies, indigenous land managers, and neighbouring landholders, to promote coordinated fire management efforts.
  • Contributing to the development of broader conservation strategies by integrating fire management practices with ecological research and land management objectives.
    • Demonstrated experience in wildfire management or related fields, with a strong understanding of fire behaviour, ecology, and risk assessment.
    • Proven ability to plan and execute prescribed burning operations while prioritising safety, managing environmental impact, and operational efficiency.
    • Excellent communication skills and the capacity to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders in collaborative fire management initiatives.
    • A proactive approach to problem-solving, adaptable leadership qualities, and a commitment to working in remote field environments under variable conditions.
    • An appreciation for the conservation mission of AWC and a willingness to contribute towards achieving its long-term objectives through effective fire management practices.
