Detailed OverviewUnder general supervision, the Unit Clerk performs a variety of clerical duties related to the operation of a patient care area. Responsibilities include acting as a communication link for the area, transcribing and processing physicians' orders, coordinating with other departments and facilities, scheduling patient appointments, arranging patient tests, receiving results, directing visitors, and assembling and maintaining patient charts. ResponsibilitiesPrioritize, process, coordinate and transcribe physicians' orders, entering information into the computer and distributing information.Schedule, book and coordinate patient appointments and tests, maintaining appointment diaries.Act as a communication link for the assigned area, contacting other facilities and departments regarding bed availability, admissions, discharges, and transfers.Assemble and maintain patient charts, transcribing data into the health record system and attaching relevant documents.Answer telephones, transfer calls, take messages and handle routine inquiries.Perform related clerical duties such as data entry, filing, preparing reports, and managing supplies.Maintain timekeeping records for staff and submit payroll information.Process requests for vacation, leaves, terminations and other staff documentation.Communicate nursing staff absences and coordinate relief nursing staff as per guidelines.Maintain records on relief staff and manage related administrative tasks.Perform other related duties as required. QualificationsEducation and ExperienceGrade 12, medical terminology and graduation from a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk program, plus one year of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills and AbilitiesCommunicate effectively both verbally and in writing.Work effectively with others.Physical ability to carry out job duties.Typing speed of 40 wpm.Organize work efficiently.Operate related equipment.Utilize a variety of computer software applications.
