Zurich Canada is currently looking for an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter, Middle Market. Reporting to the Director, Middle Market, Prairies you will be responsible for creating and maintaining strong broker relationships with the aim to provide meaningful customer service and commercial insurance solutions. Through development of broker relationships, you will thoughtfully underwrite new and renewal business while actively engaging in the marketplace to enhance the Zurich Canada brand. You will shape your portfolio of accounts within the broader Middle Market strategy as you utilize The Zurich Way of Underwriting, working within your delegated authority to ensure a high level of accountability and equally high level of service to customers.What You Will DoAdvocate the Middle Market value proposition by improving the customer experience and offering end‑to‑end insurance solutions.Develop and nurture broker networks focused on target industries as outlined in the business strategy.Make broker calls with a purpose focused on promoting our products and services to increase penetration.Identify opportunities through local relationships, seeking renewal and new account opportunities to grow profitability.Apply disciplined exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing to qualify accounts that align with business strategy and appetite.Measure exposure and analyze opportunities to provide appropriate coverage per organization risk and compliance processes.Apply rating tools and methodologies to deliver to customers and suggest improvements.Use risk insights and analytical tools to drive informed decisions at the point of sale.Work within limits and delegated authorities while adhering to underwriting rules, guidelines, compliance protocols, and insurance regulations.Apply best practices and continuously improve underwriting systems and processes.Up‑sell additional coverages in the Middle Market product suite (Z‑Guard) for a comprehensive package solution.Cross‑sell other lines of business to increase product density within the account for a comprehensive Zurich solution.Understand customer needs, challenges, and market dynamics to initiate Middle Market product solutions for development.Demonstrate key aspects of portfolio management in consideration of performance metrics, data, and insights to improve portfolio and drive diversified growth.Ensure strong partnership with UAs within the Underwriting Services team to provide proactive engagement with brokers and best‑in‑industry customer service focused on quote, policy issuance, and premium booking timeliness and accuracy.Develop individual skill set and product knowledge to become a trusted advisor to Middle Market brokers and customers.QualificationsRequiredHigh School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.ANDKnowledge of lines of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment.Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, pricing and guideline requirements.Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.Experience working in a team environment.Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s Degree with 3 years or more experience in the commercial P&C underwriting area.Strong negotiation skills.Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.Microsoft Office skills.Our CultureCollaborative culture where diversity of thought is valued.Comprehensive health and benefits plan with varying levels of coverage.Minimum of four weeks of vacation per year.Four personal days per year to be used at discretion.Access to comprehensive training and development opportunities.Commitment to continuous improvement and community support.Recognition and awards for workplace culture.About UsZurich Canada is part of the Zurich Insurance Group, a multi‑line insurer with approximately 55,000 employees worldwide serving customers in global and local markets.
