Position Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, Library User Services and the User Service Librarian, the Library Technician will support learners in research and scholarship activities and perform various Unified Library System (ULS) workflows.

The Library Technician will provide face-to-face and virtual services to students, answering basic and in-depth research questions using Seneca Libraries’ resources and collections. They will also provide academic integrity support through citation interactions with students.

Responsibilities

Research and Scholarship Support:

  • Engages with student workers as stakeholders on projects and services.
  • Provides demonstrations and assistance to learners on the use of the library’s various resources, systems and platforms.
  • Answers a wide range of research questions with appropriate research suggestions and strategies andprovide informed referrals as required.
  • Actively pursues opportunities to gain awareness of and expertise in new researchtools, technologies, and skills.
  • Delivers citation/plagiarism consultations.

Unified Library System (ULS) Workflows:

  • Ensures access to the physical collection during hours of operation and its protection outside of operating hours.
  • Processes the circulation of the physical collection using library equipment (e.g., SelfCheck, Library Pickup Lockers, RFID pads) and software (e.g., Alma, Bilbliotheca StaffConnect).
  • Maintains steady and active communication with library colleagues through various channels to inform processes, resolve problems, and ensure consistency and accuracy of services.
  • Reviews library content across public-facing and back-end websites, knowledgebases, and resources for currency and accuracy.
Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum completed two (2) year diploma in a Library and Information Technician program.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in a library environment providing in-person and virtual research services and performing backend library operations.

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to effectively interact and support a diverse group of students, faculty and staff.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with high levels of accuracy, thoroughness and the ability to act with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to plan and give presentations to students.
  • Practical knowledge of relevant software, such as Alma and Bibliotheca StaffConnect, and the ability to compile statistical reports.
  • Innovative mindset, with a focus on continuous improvement.
