Fraser Health offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including comprehensive health benefits.Take the next step and apply so we can continue the conversation with you.Detailed OverviewIn accordance with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and Fraser Health values, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse provides services to individuals with mental illness and/or substance use issues. In partnership with the municipal police/RCMP, the nurse helps respond to 911 Emergency mental health and domestic violence calls and requests from hospital and community mental health services. The nurse provides emergency on-site assessment of persons in psychiatric or psychosocial crises. The nurse and police officer work as a team to assess, manage, and decide the most appropriate intervention.Responsibilities Responds to crisis situations by obtaining collateral information, determining necessity of a response, and coordinating with police and other emergency providers; provides outreach, short-term treatment, crisis intervention, stabilization, and referrals. Assesses lethality, threats of violence, suicide risk, and intervention urgency through mental health and risk assessments in coordination with the police officer. Assesses clients’ needs and available services; develops treatment options, ensures client input, and refers to appropriate community treatment alternatives; shares care plans with community resources and mental health professionals and family as required. Screens and intervenes in urgent response situations by acquiring background information, making initial assessments, completing forms, contacting relevant parties, and arranging transportation per established protocols. Provides medication management by maintaining a medication kit, administering medications per physician orders, monitoring effects, and informing clients about medications. Collaborates with the interprofessional care team to identify and resolve issues, adjust care plans, and respond to changes in client condition. Documents assessments, care plans, observations, interventions, responses, outcomes, and referrals per practice standards and Fraser Health procedures. Participates in research and quality improvement by identifying care issues, collecting data, and recommending changes to practices or protocols. Provides health education to clients, families, and consumer groups on illness prevention, crisis management, suicide prevention, medication management, community resources, and coping with illness. Advocates for clients by informing about appeal processes, access to information, and consumer advocacy; ensures basic needs are met through available programs during crisis stabilization. Promotes the Mobile Integrated Crisis Response Program and participates in meetings and committees as required. Participates with stakeholders in case conferences to develop community care plans for high users of crisis and emergency services. Identifies own learning needs and engages in activities to meet those goals in collaboration with the Team Coordinator. Performs other related duties as assigned. QualificationsEducation and ExperienceGraduation from an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing. Two (2) years of recent related experience providing treatment services to individuals with mental health and/or concurrent disorders, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage. Successful completion of Enhanced Security Police Clearance required.Skills and Abilities Ability to perform mental health and substance use assessments and provide nursing care including crisis intervention. Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment; knowledge of psychopharmacology and related side-effects. Counselling and group facilitation skills. Knowledge of relevant legislation and government policies for mental health and substance use services. Effective written and verbal communication with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and the interprofessional care team. Ability to promote person-centered care with empathy and cultural safety; advocate for diverse populations. Ability to educate clients and families about health care topics. Strong organization and prioritization skills; ability to collaborate within an interprofessional team. Ability to use evidence-informed practice to support nursing decisions; operate related equipment and computer applications. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
