About our Organization:

The Esquimalt Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose wellness and community recreation facility. Features of the Recreation Centre include: 4500+ square foot Wellness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, gymnasium, aquatic centre with six-lane 25 metre lap pool, warm “lifestyle pool” and tot pool with spray features, wheelchair accessible hot-tub, steam room, and sauna. In addition to recreation activities and programs, there are hundreds of year-round community programs to choose from.

About the Opportunity:

The Recreation Department is seeking enthusiastic and reliable individuals to plan and lead a variety of Day Camps and Extended Care programs We provide 9 weeks of camps that run out of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Archie Browning Sports Centre, and Bullen Field. This is a temporary, 11-week position requiring the incumbent to work from June 16, 2025, to August 29, 2025, with potential to stay on in the Fall for our Out of School Care program.

Our Preferred Candidate:

Reporting to the OSC & Camps Supervisor, the ideal candidate will:

  • Ensure the fun and safety of all participants through child supervision, first aid, site safety, risk management, and behaviour management.
  • Create lesson plans, supply lists, and lead activities during the 9 weeks of summer camps.
  • Lead a variety of games, arts/crafts, sports, and outdoor recreational activities for children ages 3-14 years old.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with participants, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Provide excellent customer service and public relations and enjoy working in a fast-paced outdoor environment.
Qualifications:
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate & CPR-C.
  • Experience working with children ages 3-14 years in any of the following settings: day camps, sports, out of school care programs, recreational programs.
  • Experience working with individuals with extra support needs (behavioural or cognitive).
  • Previous training/education in child or youth care.
  • Clean Criminal Record Check (to be completed when hired).
  • Class 4 driver’s license (not required for all positions).

Salary: $23.57 ($20.68 hourly plus 14% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates)).

Hours per week: Full Day Camp Leaders (up to 16 positions): 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8:45am – 4:15pm. Part-time Extended Care Leaders (up to 10 positions): approximately 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday 7:00am – 9:00am and 3:30pm – 5:30pm.
