Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Accounting Date Posted: 09/10/2025Closing Date: 11/11/2025, 11:59PM ETReq ID: 44051Job Category: Faculty - Teaching Stream (continuing)Faculty/Division: University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM)Department: UTM: Institute for Management & InnovationCampus: University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Description The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time teaching‑stream position in Accounting. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027. Applicants must have earned a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., PhD in Accounting) by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Alternatively, applicants must have earned a graduate degree in a relevant field (Doctor of Business Administration, Master of Accounting, Master of Business Administration, Master of Finance, Master of Management and Professional Accounting, Master of Taxation) and have at least three (3) years of professional work experience. A recognized professional accounting designation, with preference for a Canadian designation, is an asset. Relevant fields of study include, but are not limited to: accounting, finance, business administration, taxation, analytics, or other related management disciplines. The successful candidate will primarily teach in and contribute to the Master of Management and Professional Accounting Program (MMPA) and may also teach in other IMI programs where their expertise aligns. Candidates must demonstrate experience in preparing students for the accounting profession, and teaching expertise in a graduate or undergraduate degree‑granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, and curriculum development. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching‑related scholarly activities. Responsibilities may include contributions to MMPA student engagement initiatives, curriculum design, and case competitions. Priority areas for teaching and pedagogy‑focused scholarship include assurance, financial reporting, managerial accounting, and tax. Candidates should be able to teach in more than one of these areas. Prior experience in the CPA Common Final Examination (CFE) preparation, particularly with integrative case writing, is highly desirable. Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference. Professional degree program management and university administrative experiences are desirable. The successful candidate has the potential to assume an administrative leadership role in the MMPA program, particularly if their teaching and expertise align with the program's administrative needs. This is an opportunity, not a requirement, and will be discussed further with the successful candidate. Salary will be commensurate with qualification and experience. IMI Overview IMI encourages collaboration and empowers transformational, inter‑disciplinary thinking to combine and share knowledge and discover new and better solutions to the world’s wicked problems. IMI’s faculty are world‑class scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including management, political science, economics, planning, geography, and chemistry. IMI is home to UTM’s professional graduate and undergraduate education programs, which aim to develop innovation‑focused leaders who will contribute to creating a more sustainable world. IMI’s interdisciplinary programs blend business, natural/physical sciences, and social sciences, and are distinctive in their focus on experiential and applied learning. IMI faculty members contribute to graduate programs including: Master of Biotechnology, Master of Forensic Accounting, Master of Management of Innovation, Master of Management & Professional Accounting, Master of Science in Sustainability Management, and Master of Urban Innovation. Undergraduate programs include: Minor in Business, Science, and Entrepreneurship, and the Certificate in Global Sustainability. IMI is home to the BigDataAIHUB, UTM’s business incubator, the ICUBE, and delivers impactful executive education programs through IMIx. IMI’s MMPA program is aligned with the reshaping of accounting research and education. IMI’s Big Data & Artificial Intelligence Hub (BIGDataAIHUB) focuses on innovation related to the increasing use of digitization, data analytics, and artificial intelligence within organizations. The accounting profession, and the MMPA, are uniquely focused on playing a leading role in the areas of sustainability, sustainability reporting and providing assurance on sustainability disclosures. Diversity & Inclusion At UTM, we are committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. We especially welcome applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment. Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking on the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a diversity statement (as described above); and a complete teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations. Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references, at least one of which must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee within 48 hours after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ. Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Dr. Shauna Brail at imidirrector@utoronto.ca. All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by November 11, 2025.
