Social Research Associate Reporting to the Manager, Social Economic Programs, Regulatory Approvals, the successful candidate will provide social research technical expertise and experience in designing and conducting socio-cultural and health technical studies and programs. They will have a demonstrated track record in the design and delivery of municipal and Indigenous community participatory engagement. The incumbent will initiate, design and deliver social, cultural and health assessment and program initiatives. They will build and maintain relationships and support community capacity building and community studies. They will prepare documentation based on the results of dialogue and engagement activities, and a review of social research. The incumbent will provide advice on opportunities to increase positive business impacts and to identify mitigation measures to contribute to overall social performance. They will prepare writing materials and presentations for a variety of audiences including internal stakeholders, communities, government authorities, regulatory bodies and others on behalf of the NWMO. Key Responsibilities Plan and manage the implementation of technical studies, surveys and other social research initiatives specific to Indigenous and non-Indigenous community and regional community social, cultural, economic and health topics to advance approvals for the deep geological repository (DGR) Project and NWMO’s commitment to foster community well‑being and sustainability. Undertake technical analysis, review and reporting specific to socio‑economic effects assessment affecting Indigenous and non‑Indigenous communities, including primary and secondary research, data interpretation and modelling. Collaborate with the Supervisor and other internal stakeholders to design, implement, and document engagement and other activities with the public and Indigenous communities. Manage an internal community feedback loop specific to the regulatory approvals process and the Project. Coordinate contractors within budget and schedule, providing regular feedback on performance and risks. Handle internal communications and collaboration with regulatory and other teams to align activities with broader decision‑making. Conduct research and analysis, providing advice on business and community‑based solutions, strategies, partnerships and programs to optimize socio‑economic benefits and mitigate negative impacts. Develop and present to external stakeholders, including Indigenous and non‑Indigenous community representatives, government authorities, and academic groups, to inform and engage them in NWMO’s activities. Stay abreast of developments in social, cultural, health, and community impacts, and apply findings to improve work and business practices. Support internal management systems such as budget tracking, risk registry, and departmental safety programs. Perform other duties as required. Qualifications Completion of a Master’s degree in social sciences (e.g., political science, sociology, geography, environmental studies) or equivalent education. Over 8 years of experience in design and conduct of socio‑cultural technical research and analysis in regulatory or community development contexts, especially in remote or rural settings. In‑depth knowledge of social research and development, with ability to provide technical advice and interpret results. Excellent dialogue and design skills to build and maintain Indigenous and non‑Indigenous community confidence in the project. Demonstrated preparation of accurate, evidence‑based social research reports. Experience managing consultant work and delivering complex projects independently. Excellent writing and listening skills for effective communication with diverse audiences. Project management skills to manage multiple concurrent projects and work autonomously within multidisciplinary teams. Experience conducting social impact assessments and managing related processes. Knowledge of standards, guidelines, and legislation relevant to Indigenous peoples and public impact assessment. Public speaking experience to present to varied audiences. Willingness to travel in Ontario throughout the year. Other Must be eligible to work in Canada and meet security clearance requirements. Competitive base salary, health care benefits and a defined benefit pension plan. Office location: 22 St. Clair Avenue East until relocation is required; preference given to applicants residing in Northwestern Ontario or willing to relocate. Hybrid work model: 3 days in office (Tuesdays universal) and 2 days working from home.
