Laboratory Technician - Uroliths University of Guelph Location: Guelph, Ontario, N1G 2W1 General Purpose The Urolith lab, Microscopy Services, provides analysis of the composition of veterinary uroliths for client veterinarians to aid in the long‑term treatment of the affected animal. Duties And Responsibilities Receive, organize, and prepare uroliths for analysis. Schedule incoming submissions to meet turn‑around times. Accurately analyze the chemical composition of uroliths with microscopic methods and case history data. Report results to clients electronically within client‑defined deadlines. Enter results into LIMS. Respond to client inquiries. Ensure specimens are properly filed, stored, and disposed of safely, and operate laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures. Requirements Three‑year Community College diploma with a preferred emphasis on laboratory and science related courses with specialized training in light and electron microscopy, combined with 9–12 months of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated knowledge of and working experience with light and electron microscopes, crystallographic methods, x‑ray microanalysis systems, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and infrared (IR) microscopes. Demonstrated ability to accurately identify composition of uroliths using the preceding methods. Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities to work in a team environment with tight, client‑driven deadlines; strong client service background and experience conferring with clients, combined with an understanding of the requirements of working in a client‑focused organization. Proven ability to accurately capture images using cameras and microscopes. Knowledge of ISO standards and QMS. Understanding of Health & Safety and WHMIS within a laboratory environment.
