The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), North America's third largest transit system, is looking for two Design Engineers/Designers, Electrical & Traction Power to join our team

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer - Electrical, you will be responsible for providing expertise in relation to engineering work associated with the design, operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation of TTC's systems and components for buildings and facilities, electrical and traction power systems, substations, and subway and surface structures.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, scheduling, and producing detailed design, contract specifications, and engineering drawings for department-specific system projects.
  • Coordinating and guiding relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers in section-specific design work.
  • Resolving design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.
  • Performing complex engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications.
  • Investigating and testing new or existing systems, components, and construction methods; troubleshooting operating problems and recommending alternate designs.
  • Compiling cost and quantity estimates for specific projects and programs.
  • Initiating procurement processes, reviewing technical proposals for compliance, and evaluating tenders.
  • Performing feasibility studies and assessing the condition of existing systems and equipment.
  • Providing technical support and engineering guidance to relevant staff on a 24-hour basis as required.
  • Providing design review expertise of submissions received from the EC&E Group.
  • Reporting significant safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, and quality issues in a timely manner.
  • Independently accessing all TTC properties and construction sites on a 24-hour basis.
  • Going into the field before, during, and after the design and construction phases.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
  • Completion of a university degree in a related discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering) or equivalent experience.
  • Registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) as a licensed Engineer or progress towards obtaining a P.Eng licence within a year.
  • Several years of related work experience, including practical experience with electrical and traction power systems.
  • Sound knowledge of electrical design principles and industrial power systems.
  • Well-developed technical, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and applications related to the work.
  • Ability to acquire Subway Rulebook Certification and Work Protection Code training.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and applicable standards.
