Responsibilities
  • Providing managerial oversight, authority, and effective supervision for the Claims team.
  • Holding the Claims team accountable for accomplishing their objectives.
  • Reviewing staffing, scheduling, and team processes. Conducting interviews for vacancies as required.
  • Preparation and upkeep of Workflows/ Training manuals and claim forms as required.
  • Departmental meetings and monthly one-on-one individual meetings.
  • Manage and monitor absences and vacation requests.
  • Removing barriers to performance and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Claims Department.
  • Subject matter expert and resource to assist the team with problem solving.
  • Providing superior customer service and appropriate investigation for escalated matters and appeals.
  • Developing and applying methods to proactively identify, monitor and intervene in large loss claims or potentially fraudulent claims.
  • Review denial letters and review/release all claim payments over assigned authority levels.
  • Ensuring all work is completed in a PIPEDA and HIPAA compliant manner.
  • Developing and implementing departmental initiatives to increase revenues and meet company objectives.
  • Identifying claims trends and communicating to appropriate parties.
  • Participating in client implementations by analyzing the required resources, tools, training and then executing an onboarding plan.
  • Performing full budgetary analyses and tracking for all current and projected department expenses.
  • Ensuring that appropriate action plans have been set to support change initiatives and that the proper resources are allocated to these plans.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent industry experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of claims handling experience; handling complex files.
  • A minimum of 2 years of leadership experience.
  • Relevant and progressive claims experience, inclusive of technical and coverage issues, management/resolution.
  • Working knowledge of legislation governing property and casualty insurance claims.
  • Familiarity with established and recent case law.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of claims settlement, policy wording, fraud investigations and coverage issues.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook).
  • Progressive experience in training/mentoring/coaching using a variety of approaches.
