Weldco Heavy Industries is currently recruiting a Structural Plate Fitter for the Fort MacKay location on a 2 weeks on/ 2 weeks off rotation, 12-hour shifts.

Functional Summary

The journeyman level fitter works under the general supervision of the lead hand and reports to the Foreman in the Fabrication/Welding Shop. As a skilled tradesman, the incumbent will provide quality customer service. Structural steel and plate fitters lay out, prepare, and assemble structural steel, buckets, thumbs, couplers, and other miscellaneous components.

Responsibilities, Duties and Tasks

Working under the general supervision of the Lead Hand, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Workplace Safety
  • Practices safety in the workplace at all times to ensure he or she does not endanger oneself or others in the plant.
  • Complies with all safety rules and practices as set by Occupational Health and Safety, Weldco Heavy Industries and any and all other relevant safety regulations and requirements.
Customer Service
  • Provides quality customer service to internal clients.
  • Responds to requests in a prompt and expeditious manner.
  • Produces quality workmanship on finished products.
  • Reviews drawings and confers with lead hand when required.
  • Plans the sequence of tasks and decides how to cut the steel most efficiently.
  • Determines the materials required and obtains them from stock.
  • Develops and/or marks patterns if required.
  • Uses metal-working machines and cutting torches to cut steel, drill or punch holes, and roll.
  • Assembles and fits metal sections and plates together to form complete units or sub-units.
  • Fastens components together (by mechanical means or tack weld) in preparation for a welder to complete the process.
Other Duties
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications

Education

  • Alberta Journeyman Structural Steel and Plate Fitter Ticket or Red Seal Certification.
  • Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of related experience.
Knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of all safety practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of all tools and equipment and their use and care.
Skills
  • Communication skills to read, write, listen, and speak in a clear and concise manner to individuals at various levels.
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with others.
  • Time management skills to productively complete work and meet all deadlines.
  • Organizational skills to plan out and coordinate his or her work in a logical manner.
  • Analytical skills to identify problems and find a solution or seek advice from the supervisor.
Abilities
  • Safety conscious.
  • Follows instructions thoroughly and uses good judgment.
  • Physically fit to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Self-motivated to manage his or her time effectively and productively.
