Detailed Overview In accordance with established standards of practice and guidelines, you will work under the direct clinical supervision of an Anaesthesiologist to provide technical support and clinical assistance during the induction, maintenance, and recovery phases of anaesthesia, including monitoring physiological responses of patients during surgery. You will maintain, operate, and calibrate anaesthetic, cell‑saving and related equipment; document procedures; enter data into a database; and participate in clinical committees, research, and special projects. Responsibilities Assist with and/or perform duties such as: Pre‑induction procedures Arterial line catheterisation Endotracheal intubation Central line insertion Autotransfusion (cell saver) Pulmonary artery catheter insertion Setting up and assisting with epidural placement and taping Assisting in imaging procedures (MRI, CT, Angio) as required Perform arterial punctures, blood sampling, airway management, and assist with difficult intubations. Under anaesthesiologist direction, administer blood products and monitor patient vital signs pre‑ and post‑transfusion. Perform cell‑saving functions during surgery, including collecting, cleansing, and recycling patient blood. Administer inhaled medications, monitor airways, adjust ventilation, and manage cardio‑respiratory monitoring systems. Draw up prescribed drugs, observe for side‑effects, assist in anaesthetic block and conscious sedation procedures, and monitor efficacy. Obtain diagnostic data such as arterial blood gas sampling, point‑of‑care analysis, pulmonary function testing, exhaled gas monitoring, vital signs, and pulse oximetry; maintain hemodynamic recordings. Respond to airway emergencies, cardiac arrests in the OR and PACU, and other critical areas. Provide temporary anaesthetic care to stable patients during anaesthesiologist absence. Initiate ventilatory support in PACU and coordinate with the anaesthesiologist for long‑term ventilation plans. Support pacemaker procedures, operator of anaesthetic analyzers, and completion of records. Assist with fibre‑optic bronchoscopy via equipment preparation and verification. Provide clinical education to respiratory therapy students and paramedics. Deliver general orientation on anaesthetic equipment and procedures to medical and allied health professionals. Maintain and repair anaesthetic and cell‑saving equipment, perform quality control, and coordinate with Biomedical Engineering. Maintain documentation of procedures, co‑sign anaesthetic record sheets, and enter data into approved databases. Participate in professional committees, review patient care documentation, and provide input to improve care and operations. Engage in research and special projects, collecting and analysing data. Assist with transfer and transport of ventilated patients, monitoring respiratory status during transport. Continuously develop professional knowledge through education and training events. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited post‑graduate diploma Anaesthesia Assistant Program. Graduation from a recognized School of Respiratory Therapy Diploma Program plus three (3) years of recent related clinical experience, including one (1) year of recent experience as an Anaesthesia Assistant, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapy (BCSRT). Current certification in CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Skills and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of current anaesthesia assistant theory and practice. Broad knowledge of Canadian Anaesthesiologists Society clinical practice guidelines for Anaesthesia Assistants. Ability to plan and implement anaesthesia‑related care plans. Ability to assess client responses to care and respond appropriately. Ability to adjust to new or unexpected events. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team. Broad knowledge of research processes and methodologies. Ability to establish workload priorities collaboratively. Skill in CPR techniques. Computer skills, including effective use of a computerized patient care information system. Skill in use of related medical equipment and supplies. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
