ROM is Canada’s premier museum, offering a world‑class collection of birds and a unique opportunity for a Curator of Birds to shape research, exhibitions, and public programs.Position OverviewROM seeks an innovative and collaborative Curator to build, research, interpret, and share the Museum’s Birds collection and to be an engaging spokesperson for the importance of birds.ResponsibilitiesPassionately engage the public, fostering understanding and dialogue about the importance of birds.Promote and facilitate scientific and public access to ROM’s diverse Birds Collection.Establish a vision and a 10‑year plan for continuing to develop ROM’s Birds Collection.Create impactful programs, panels, and publications that engage experts and broad audiences.Conduct conceptually driven, collection‑aligned, original research on bird systematics, evolution, ecology, conservation biology, and related fields.Lead collaboratively within transdisciplinary exhibition teams and with educators, programmers, and designers to integrate ornithology into exhibitions and permanent galleries.Partner with Indigenous and other communities to develop exhibitions and programs, integrating Indigenous perspectives.Serve as a dynamic and effective communicator and spokesperson for bird conservation.Participate in fundraising activities supporting ROM’s strategic initiatives, programming, and research.Engage in university teaching or supervision of graduate students and interns as appropriate.Supervise, train, and monitor contract or part‑time staff, volunteers, interns, and students working in collections, laboratories, and the field.Maintain professional affiliations in scholarly, scientific, and museum curatorial organizations.What You Bring – Education & ExperienceA PhD or equivalent in bird systematics, ecology, or conservation biology, with strong expertise in avian taxonomy.At least one year of postdoctoral or equivalent experience in a large museum, university, NGO, or government department.A record of original research and peer‑reviewed publications or catalogues appropriate for your career stage.Experience proposing and developing museum exhibitions and public programs.Strong public‑speaking skills and interest in science communication and outreach.Experience collaborating with Indigenous communities and cross‑cultural experience (assets).Knowledge of museum ethics standards, digitization of ornithology collections, bioinformatics, image banks, and history of birds (assets).Proven record of successful grant applications and/or donor and sponsor development (assets).Salary & Terms of EmploymentSalary range: $78,047 – $122,654 CAD, aligned with the union collective agreement and based on experience.Position level ranges from Associate Curator to Curator, consistent with the candidate’s experience and mission of the museum.Benefits includeMedical and dental plan, life insurance, long‑term disability insurance.Health Spending Account and fitness facility discounts.Pension plan.22‑day vacation entitlement and personal days.Employee Assistance Program.This is a unionised position; the Curator of Birds will be a member of the ROM Curatorial Association (ROMCA).How to ApplyA cover letter expressing interest in the position and relating past experience in exhibitions, programmes, and collections, as well as proposed research areas and salary requirement.A curriculum vitae.Names and contact information for three references, and the professional relationship.Application deadline: November 15, 2025For additional information, visit: http://museum-search.com/open-searches/For inquiries, please contact Ida Tomlin, Senior Search Consultant, Museum Search & Reference at: [email protected] #J-18808-Ljbffr
