Senior/Intermediate Environmental Engineer
WSP is one of the world's leading professional services firms. Our purpose is to future proof our cities and environments.
We have over 55,000 team members across the globe. In Canada, our 9,800+ people are involved in everything from environmental remediation to urban planning, from engineering iconic buildings to designing sustainable transportation networks, from finding new ways to extract essential resources to developing renewable power sources for the future.
The excellence we bring to our work and to our workplace has been recognized far and wide. We are among the LinkedIn Top 25 Companies two years in a row, one of the Top 100 Sustainable Companies in the World (and among the Top 10 in Canada), and we earned Platinum Elite Recognition through our participation in more than half of Canada's Top 100 Infrastructure Projects.
The Opportunity:
You'll be part of a growing team, using your skills to address environmental, waste, geological, hydrogeological, contaminated lands and/or other related issues. With proven experience working with Canadian clients in the nuclear field (e.g., Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power) you will support business development, site investigations, nuclear operations/modifications and other assessments based on your skill set.
What you will do at WSP:
- You demonstrate a "Safety-First" focus and act as a positive role model to your colleagues when you:
- adhere to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to you, WSP's clients, employees, and the public;
- identify and report potential and existing site hazards, near loss incidents and loss incidents.
- You will work with, and lead, a team of staff conducting a range of investigation and/or remediation works related to nuclear and conventional contaminants. This may include:
- Supporting/managing the Port Hope Area Initiative with characterization, remedial verification or remedial design, and potentially acting as the qualified person for this work.
- Supporting/managing subsurface and other investigations at CNL campuses (e.g., Chalk River, Whiteshell, Gentilly), the proposed deep geological repository site, operational nuclear facilities, facilities for decommissioning, and facilities planned for nuclear development.
- Providing support to geotechnical, engineering design, permitting, decommissioning and construction services staff as they conduct works on nuclear facilities and require environmental input.
- Managing other projects (or coordinating other disciplines) related to the nuclear industry such as research assignments, risk assessments, groundwater evaluations, permitting requirements or standards development.
- Managing other environmental projects for non-nuclear clients. This may include contaminated lands work (e.g., Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs, remediation, excess soil management) or other environmental work in your area of expertise.
- Liaising with clients to scope potential works, resolve issues and promote WSP's services. Liaising with internal service providers to grow WSP's services and ensure clients' needs are met.
- In keeping with our culture of technical excellence, we expect that you maintain excellent notes, and that you perform and record work tasks as requested efficiently and accurately while adhering to current industry standards and regulatory requirements. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) are essential
- The current job position is located in the Whitby or Port Hope office but can be from other locations and some portion of remote/home work is also available.
- Have a professional certification (P.Eng., P.Geo. or other).
- Have 10 years or more of relevant working experience in the field of environmental projects. This may be related to site assessments (Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, O. Reg. 153/04, O. Reg. 406/19) or may be in an alternative field (e.g., nuclear project management, waste management, permitting).
- Have experience related to radiological contaminants and nuclear client requirements. In particular, CNL, OPG and/or Bruce Power related experience or training is valued.
- Have excellent communication skills (verbal, written), strong attention to detail and a passion for health and safety. In particular experience communicating with clients is required.
- Have a valid driver's license, and access to a vehicle for light duty projects within the area (reimbursable).
Health and Safety is a core paramount value of WSP. Given the importance of keeping one another safe it is expected that you comply with our Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policy at all times as well as client HSE policies when working at client locations.
Offers of employment for safety-sensitive positions involving fieldwork are contingent upon candidates being able to perform key physical tasks of the job as described in the job posting and interview. This may include the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, such as remote or isolated areas, working alone, and in inclement weather (within safe and reasonable limits).
WSP welcomes and encourages applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.
WSP is committed to the principles of employment equity. Only the candidates selected will be contacted.
WSP does not accept unsolicited resumes from agencies.
