Position Purpose

Provides leadership, management, decision-making, and all knowledge and skill dissemination in relation to undergraduate legal research programs, with a view to ensuring critical and experiential core research, citation, and professional writing competencies for all English Common Law graduates as specified by Federation of Law Societies (on average 400 students per year).

This position oversees The Common Law Section's legal research components for all JD students. Teaches substantive law courses in the Common Law Section's English Program. Legal research is a core legal skill, necessary to learn and perform in all other areas of law. Employers look for high performance in legal research when hiring our students.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expertise, leadership, and creativity in developing, revising, and conducting undergraduate legal research and writing programs, including core first year programming and the competitive Dean's Legal Research and Writing Fellowship program for upper year students.
  • Cultivate strong, professional relationships with legal practitioners in the Ottawa community and beyond to ensure that the progressive development of first and upper year legal research programs accounts for the evolving needs of the legal profession.
  • Provide linkages and opportunities for upper year J.D. students to lead, mentor, and support first year colleagues, while simultaneously creating networks between students and external legal mentors, which provide students the opportunity to display and develop research and writing excellence and to act as ambassadors of the law school to the external community.
  • Teach up to four courses in the undergraduate program (JD) related to legal research, writing, and substantive law, as determined by the Vice Deans (French and English), thus contributing to the academic programming of the Common Law Section and enhancing the rigour and repute of legal research programming at the Faculty.
What You Will Bring
  • Undergraduate and Post-graduate degree in law with experience in applying and developing legal research and writing competencies both within and outside of a law school, in a diversity of settings.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years' experience teaching, with at least five of those teaching research and writing.
  • Good standing of at least ten (10) years in a provincial or territorial law society.
  • Excellent knowledge and ability to demonstrate knowledge of such core legal research tools as: CanLII, WestlawNext, Advance Quicklaw, Justice Laws, Canada Gazette, e-Laws, Ontario Gazette, Hein on Line, LII, Justis, and Social Sciences Research Network.
  • Strong knowledge of the application of core competencies in the legal profession in a variety of contexts.
  • Experience in providing educational, experiential, and professional leadership to students.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, maintain and build relationships and partnerships.
  • Excellent and constantly updated knowledge of legal citation and ability to convey these technical skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Superior time management skills.
  • Ability to assess desired learning outcomes and transform those into meaningful and challenging programming.
  • Functional bilingualism preferred.
