Associate Physician, Adolescent Psychiatry Assessment Unit

Within the context of a patient- and family-centered model of care and, in accordance with the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions of Northern Health Authority, the Associate Physician (AP), Adolescent Psychiatry Assessment Unit (APAU), performs duties within the scope of an Associate Physician’s clinical duties and responsibilities. They serve as a physician extender to provide care to inpatients on the adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit, as well as to assist with psychiatric consultations in the emergency department at UHNBC. The AP works under the supervision of the most responsible provider (MRP)/attending on a day-to-day basis and is accountable to the respective physician program director or documented delegate for the overall provision of quality of care and professional development. The AP supports the provision of continuous care in a team-based care environment, working collaboratively with the MRP, residents, nursing and allied care providers to care for adolescent psychiatry patients, including those admitted under the Department of Psychiatry. The AP will be conducting adolescent psychiatric assessments in the UHNBC emergency department, and inpatient psychiatric unit, under the direct supervision of staff psychiatrists on duty that day. The AP will be responsible for supporting the care provided by the Psychiatry team and will be accountable to the staff psychiatrists on duty for daily patient care responsibilities. The AP will provide psychiatric assessments and review of ongoing management of admitted patients under supervision using the biopsychosocial model of care. They will conduct the gathering of collateral information and participate in family meetings. They will also provide emergency psychiatric assessments under supervision during the daytime hours. The AP will participate in clinical department rounds and education events. The AP role will include history taking appropriate for the developmental stage and cognitive functioning of the patient, communicating with families and caregivers, obtaining collateral information from relevant support systems (substance use services, law enforcement, peer support counseling services, Community Mental Health teams, primary care providers, CLBC, housing programs, etc.), appropriate use of psychotropic medication under supervision, monitoring for medication side effects, appropriate use of the Mental Health Act, and Least Restraint guidelines for pediatric populations, accessing appropriate community mental health resources, and executing quality improvement strategies. FUNCTIONAL REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Associate Physician, Adolescent Psychiatry Assessment Unit reports to the Department Head, Psychiatry, or delegate for all matters pertaining to their clinical practice.
