The Educational Audiologist supports deaf and hard-of-hearing students with an emphasis on academic success. The job provides expert advice and leadership related to hearing loss and deafness. The job assesses and evaluates the learning needs of students and tailors personalized programs to support them.

The incumbent works collaboratively with educational and multi-disciplinary teams. The incumbent provides guidance regarding students with visual impairments in both Division programs and the regular community classroom, including:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assess school and classroom acoustics for the purposes of listening and learning and provide recommendations where appropriate;
  • Provide support to school staff with regard to the proper use of personal hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants, personal FM/DM system, etc.);
  • Support curricular and non-curricular auditory access through acoustical recommendations, technologies, strategies, etc.;
  • Provide support to school staff with regard to classroom audio distribution technology as it relates to the hard of hearing student;
  • Determine how the hard-of-hearing student’s personal technology can best be used with existing classroom technology (e.g. iPad, computers, etc.);
  • Liaise with community, hospital-based, and dispensing audiologists;
  • Provide in-services on relevant topics to staff and students, as needed;
  • Assist teachers and staff with educational programming for students with hearing loss and hearing difficulties;
  • Educate hard-of-hearing students about their hearing loss and related technologies;
  • Explore, with students, their acceptance and attitude towards their hearing loss.
  • Development, implementation, and monitoring of technology includes ongoing evaluation, modeling, and training for staff and parents/guardians on the full continuum of support. The incumbent functions as a diagnostic team member and provides ongoing technical assistance to students, Division staff, and parents/guardians.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Educational Audiology plus five years of directly related experience;
  • Registration with the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists is mandatory;
  • Working knowledge of specialized tools and equipment including audiometers, tympanometers, hearing aid analyzers, hearing aids, cochlear implants, personal FM systems, classroom audio distribution systems, otoscopes, sound level meters, and connectivity to Smart Boards;
  • Working knowledge of SETT framework;
  • Knowledge of leadership principles and practices, program development and delivery techniques and practices;
  • Knowledge of partnership principles and collaborative practices;
  • Knowledge of presentation techniques and practices;
  • Knowledge of project management techniques, principles, and practices;
  • Knowledge of records management principles and FOIP Legislation;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and databases;
  • Knowledge of research, data collection, and analysis techniques;
  • Knowledge of AT problem resolution of technical issues with hardware and software;
  • Knowledge of safe workplaces and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations;
  • General knowledge of the Division/department operations, business, goals and objectives;
  • Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex technical information to varied group;
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to respond to multiple job demands and balance priorities;
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills and the ability to work independently;
  • Strong consultation and facilitation skills;
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, courtesy, and good judgment, with minimal supervision, in all dealings is essential;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work with numbers.
