Chief Engineer Job Description

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a 1st Class powerhouse, overseeing critical systems including ammonia and refrigeration systems, steam systems, HVAC, plumbing, water supply, and fire protection. This role involves providing support and direction to tradespeople to ensure the reliability and efficiency of these systems. The Chief Engineer must be assertive, decisive, and results-driven, with a strong commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and team performance while supporting strategic goals and continuous improvement initiatives. This position is based onsite in Carberry, Manitoba.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Operation and maintenance of a 1st Class powerhouse that includes ammonia and refrigeration systems.
  2. Provide support and direction to tradespeople in maintaining the reliability of boiler and refrigeration, and water treatment services.
  3. Responsible for steam systems, refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, water supply systems, fire protection.
  4. Supervision of contracted services within the factory as required.
  5. Driving and supporting Continuous Improvement ideas along with problem solving & troubleshooting opportunities that arise on shift.
  6. Administrative responsibilities include budget control as well as task/time scheduling using relevant software and electronic reports as required.
  7. Administrative functions of a supervisory role, such as time keeping, vacation planning, taking call-ins and finding replacements.
  8. Manage overall operation of the department.
  9. Assist factory teams in developing areas of opportunity.
  10. With support from other leaders, ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
  11. Coaching & mentoring plant associates on change management and driving/sustaining positive business practices and tool applications on the shop floor.
  12. Prepare shift schedules.
  13. Oversee associate training.
  14. Liaison with corporate support for project management initiatives.
  15. As a member of the maintenance leadership team at the facility, participate in the continuous improvement process. This includes taking an active role in process improvement initiatives, employee training, and upgrading your current skill base.
  16. Support and identify training opportunities/activities for the Maintenance Department.
  17. Complete and submit required reports in a timely manner.
  18. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications
  1. 1st Class Power Engineers Certificate
  2. 5 to 10 years of supervisory experience
  3. Experience managing performance and work quality of direct reports
  4. Conflict resolution
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to people at all levels of the business
  6. Ability to motivate yourself and others to achieve personal and departmental objectives
  7. Ability to prioritize work, demonstrate flexibility and work effectively under pressure
  8. Can make sound judgments and decisions when dealing with complex issues in high-pressure situations
