Eligibility requirements for applicants:

Applicants hired must meet the eligibility criteria of the NOHFC Workforce Development Stream Internship Program:

  • Are new entrants into the work force, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field;
  • Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship;
  • Are at least 18 years of age; and
  • Reside, and be legally entitled to work, in Canada.

General Overview:

The Watershed Stewardship Technician Intern reports to the Watershed Biologist and may receive direction from the Chief Administrative Officer. Working in a team environment, the Watershed Stewardship Technician Intern will assist with the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority’s (LRCA’s) stewardship program and contribute to on-going studies and projects. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include: raising awareness of riparian and shoreline stewardship principles, assisting in the execution of habitat restoration projects, cultivating native species, and coordinating volunteer events.

Stewardship activities can range from terrestrial/aquatic plantings, invasive plant species removal, green infrastructure techniques, species-at-risk habitat enhancement/protection, general habitat enhancement, and/or pollinator habitat creation. The Watershed Stewardship Technician Intern will support LRCA’s Conservation Areas and stewardship programs such as Seeds for Conservation, Superior Stewards, the Shoreline Protection Program, and the Hope and Memory Garden.

Field work will also include environmental education programs and events, contributing to the vision of a healthy, safe, and sustainable Lakehead Watershed for future generations. Additionally, the position will include public outreach activities such as creating educational materials and promoting the stewardship program to watershed residents. This may include developing, implementing, and attending public events. Office duties will include tending to greenhouse plants, data entry, developing plans and reports, and completing additional tasks as required.

This position normally works a 35-hour work week with occasional evening and weekend involvement. Occasional assistance with LRCA’s public events may be required on an as-needed basis. Hours beyond the normal work week are compensated with time-off in lieu as agreed to with supervisor, in advance when possible.
The work week is Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m.
A valid clean driver’s license and access to a working vehicle is required.

Duties:

1. Stewardship Program and Restoration Projects:

  • Assist with revegetation activities, invasive species pulls, clean-ups, habitat structure maintenance, and other stewardship activities.
  • Monitor existing stewardship sites for percent re-growth, germination success, and coordinate maintenance as needed.
  • Transportation of native trees, shrubs, and perennials to various revegetation initiatives. 

2. Seeds for Conservation:

  • Develop, plan, implement, and administer the Seeds for Conservation Program, including developing an initial program plan and required program expenses.
  • Seed sourcing and propagation of native plant species from existing and established vegetation at Conservation Areas and LRCA properties.
  • Explore opportunities and framework for program sustainability.

3) Education and Outreach:

  • Build awareness and understanding of the importance of native plant species through education and outreach by distributing promotional materials, community events, and social media marketing.
  • Collaborate with the Education Coordinator to establish school workshops/presentations to educate youth about the ecological importance of native species.
  • Assist with the planning, preparation, and execution of various public and/or volunteering events as required through the stewardship program and projects.

4) Any other duties as assigned.

Education & Skills Required:

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma or working towards a degree/diploma in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Biology, Water Resources, Engineering, Sustainability, or related field, with an interest in ecological restoration, conservation, green infrastructure, plant biology, fluvial geomorphology, and landscaping. 
  • Experience, or interest in cultivating and caring for plants, including evaluating plant health, researching and writing on topics related to seed collection and plant care, and planting of plants appropriate for soil and terrain. With emphasis on plants native to Northwestern Ontario.
  • Understanding of social marketing strategies to foster environmentally responsible stewardship behaviour relating to native vegetation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of native plant species and their suitability for shoreline/riparian restoration.
  • Ability to recruit, coordinate and work harmoniously with volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including MS Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability in technical report writing.
  • Excellent judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal to no supervision.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
