Server Programmability’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, improving local server development experience and velocity, enhancing the programming model, and building low level reusable software components that can be leveraged by other teams working on the database.Our team currently consists of six engineers, located both in New York City and fully remote. We operate close to the bottom of the stack and have a lot of influence over the performance and robustness of our open source database as well as the development efficiency of the engineering team overall. Recently, we’ve built tooling to support better modularization of the server codebase, migrated server unit testing to a well supported open-source framework, and are evaluating the feasibility of introducing coroutines to the Server codebase.Our team champions a strong culture of inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. Let’s change what’s possible for application developers, system architects, and database operators everywhere.You’re an ideal candidate if:You have 2 or more years of experience managing a team of software engineersYou have strong technical judgment that you use to effectively guide engineering decisionsYou have first-hand experience developing complex systems in C++ (like databases, distributed systems, or high-performance applications) and you use this context to understand the challenges your team facesYou enjoy coaching, career development, and creating growth opportunities to help your team reach their full potentialYou care about building a diverse, inclusive environment where engineers can do their best workYou put the customer first and don’t hesitate to cross team boundaries in search of the right solutionResponsibilitiesLead a team of 5-8 engineers, managing all aspects of people management including hiring, growth, compensation, and performance managementBe directly responsible for the results your team deliversOwn the definition and execution of the team’s 12-month roadmapDrive improvements to processes and tools, especially those that allow us to confidently make changes to high-risk parts of our codebaseUse data to inform decisions and measure the impact of work the team shipsGuide the team through making complex changes that balance performance against other requirementsHandle (or lead the effort to handle) time-sensitive customer escalationsCollaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams across the company to jointly work on large initiativesWork with product managers, program managers, and other teams to specify, prioritize and deliver new features that delight our usersEnsure high quality and velocity in the design and implementation of new functionality in MongoDB serverSuccess measuresIn the first month: understand the high-level architecture of the server and the team’s responsibilities; start building relationships with key stakeholdersIn three months: take over management of the team, build trust with reports, and participate in design reviews for new featuresIn six months: establish leadership within the organization and contribute to planning and roadmapping effortsIn twelve months: perform a full annual cycle of performance and growth conversations and contribute to the future vision of the Server Programmability teamCompensation and benefitsMongoDB is committed to accommodating individuals with disabilities in our application and interview process.
