The role leads the MongoDB Server Query team and helps build a world-class distributed open-source query processing engine. The team is responsible for the MongoDB Query Language and the lifecycle of each query—from parsing and optimization to plan selection and execution. The position can be based out of US or Canadian offices or remote in North America.Location and work pattern: We have a presence across the US and Europe, support office-based and remote work, and align projects with convenient work hours for each time zone.Candidate ProfileResponsibilitiesManage a team of 4–8 engineers and contribute to the success of the team through leadership and hands-on support when needed.Deliver complete features in collaboration with the broader Query engineering and product team.Accurately estimate work and deliver it on time with high code and design quality.Train and motivate your team and recruit new team members.Set high standards when evaluating team performance and exemplify MongoDB’s values and leadership principles.Travel up to three weeks per year to meet with remote team members and attend team events.Qualifications8+ years of professional experience.Demonstrated success as a people manager or tech lead.Strong communication skills and a passion for mentoring and teaching.High emotional intelligence and a commitment to building inclusive teams.Experience in data management systems.Hands-on coding skills in C++ or another backend/systems language.Experience with building production-level code with a large user base, robust design, and rigorous code quality.Passion for the theory and practice of database query engines.Degree in Computer Science or similar field, or equivalent practical experience, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture.Success measuresIn three months: understand development and release processes, understand team strengths and weaknesses, contribute significantly to codebases, build trusting relationships with your manager and peers.In six months: tailor ceremonies and processes for your team, provide design and architectural guidance, identify mentorship needs, deliver significant new features.In twelve months: execute complex projects with multiple stakeholders, support professional development of your team, influence how the broader Query engineering team operates.Compensation and benefitsMongoDB’s base salary range for this role in Canada is $162,000—$225,000 CAD. Compensation is tailored to skill, experience, qualifications, and location. Other benefits may include equity, the Employee Stock Purchase Program, flexible paid time off, long parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, RRSP with employer match, mental health support, backup child and elder care, and health, dental, and vision benefits. The base salary range and benefits noted here apply to candidates based in Canada.Challenges and selection criteriaWe’re solving interesting problems across transactional, vector, full-text-search, time-series, and analytical workloads.
