Job TitleTechnician II, Animal Care (Aquatics) LocationUniversity of Ottawa – Main Campus Job TypeEmployee – Full Time Hours per Week35 SalarySSUO Grade 06 – $54,118.00 – $68,361.00 Position PurposeReporting to the Associate‑Supervisor, Animal Care Operations (Aquatics), the incumbent participates in the delivery of the program of animal care to maintain high standards of animal care, welfare, regulatory compliance and scientific integrity. Key Responsibilities Animal Husbandry – Perform daily behavior and health observation of fish and aquatic animals, monitor and record environmental parameters, execute live feed culture and feeding, and perform all required husbandry care. Animal Health – Provide treatment as prescribed by veterinarians, perform occasional necropsy, prepare fixed samples for histopathology labs and diagnostic laboratories, and prepare biological samples for shipment. Facility Maintenance – Perform daily exchange, cleaning, sanitation and disinfection of fish tanks and related equipment, maintain recirculating and flow‑through aquaculture systems, troubleshoot and repair minor system failures, and perform daily water quality analysis. Record Keeping – Complete inventory checks, recordkeeping and routine animal census. Communication – Maintain daily communication with researchers, animal users, animal care staff and facility manager regarding animal health and welfare. Qualifications Post‑secondary education in aquaculture or related field (preference). Two (2) years of relevant experience (substitutable for formal education). Ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to written Standard Operating Procedures. Strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently while functioning well in a team environment. Strong problem‑solving skills for animal health, task conflict and water treatment failures. Willingness to work after hours, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as assigned. Willingness to provide proof of vaccination history per provincial protocols. Physical ability to work in wet or humid conditions and lift 20 kg. Bilingual – French and English (spoken and written). Key Competencies Planning – Organize activities to realize objectives.
