Job Description

Allstate Canada is actively looking to hire a talented and motivated Associate Trial Lawyer to join our Claims Litigation Team. As an Associate Trial Lawyer, you will manage your own files from inception through to resolution and completion. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with Senior Lawyers on more complex files, gaining valuable experience and insight that will enhance your professional development and legal expertise.

Role Designation: Hybrid

Accountabilities:

  1. Review new file assignments and draft initial pleadings and prepare discovery.
  2. Prepare for and attend at case conferences, arbitration, discovery, mediations, pre-trials and trials.
  3. Perform due diligence; gather all relevant facts and documents; collaborate with law clerks, paralegals and/or other lawyers in assessment of file.
  4. Research and determine applicable and pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority; identify legal issues.
  5. Monitor and review new laws, regulations, and case law; identify and summarize relevant issues; collaborate with other areas of Law & Regulation department; proactively provide advice and counsel to business unit on the impact of new laws on business.
  6. Provide advice and/or legal approval related to company documents, policy, practices, and procedures.
  7. Draft, review and/or negotiate basic matters.
  8. Draft and/or review routine correspondence and communications.
  9. Respond to claims inquiries.
  10. Gather facts from client to understand goals and objectives client intends to achieve from action.
  11. Work with business colleagues to develop and implement change.
  12. Determine if/how business processes/practices need to be modified and work with client to implement change.

Qualifications:

  1. Possesses a Law Degree and is a member of the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
  2. Minimum 3-5 years’ experience. Experience with Accident Benefits preferred.
  3. Experience with issue management.
  4. Ability to influence others.
  5. Possesses analytical skills, utilizing knowledge of the law for sound decision-making.
  6. Excellent technical, drafting, reporting, and research skills are required.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  8. Exercises discretion and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  9. Computer skills including MS Office Suite.
  10. Ability to interact well with all levels of the organization.
