Position Description

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Academic position in Small Ruminant and Camelid Medicine. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Teaching and Research stream depending on experience. p>

Position Description and Associated Responsibilities

Small ruminant and camelid medicine plays an important role in veterinary practice, addressing the health and welfare needs of sheep, goats, and other camelids, which are vital for global food security and sustainable agriculture. p>

The selected applicant is an emerging leader in education, scholarship, and research in small ruminant and camelid medicine. They will contribute to our educational programs in the DVM and postgraduate programs and develop an active externally funded collaborative clinical research program in areas including, but not limited to, infectious, zoonotic and/or parasitic disease, One Health, vaccinology, and/or diagnostics.

There are cutting-edge core facilities in place, including a variety of biosafety level 2+ laboratories, small ruminant research housing at our Spy Hill campus, and state-of-the-art imaging, genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics core facilities at our Foothills Campus.

  • Assistant Professor: Requires evidence or promise of original high-quality research and scholarship and future development as a scholar. Evidence or promise of the ability to obtain funding and teaching proficiency may also be required.
  • Associate Professor: Requires evidence of an established academic program of a caliber equivalent to national recognition by peers. A record of high-quality research and scholarship suitable to the discipline is expected. Evidence of ability to obtain funding to sustain a research program and teaching effectiveness is required.

Position Requirements

  • DVM (or equivalent)
  • Board Certification in Small Ruminant Medicine
  • Experience with DVM course delivery, content development, and coordination, and mentorship/supervisory experience at the graduate and undergraduate student level is essential.
  • PhD or equivalent
  • Postdoctoral research experience in small ruminant research demonstrated by a track record of peer-reviewed research publications
  • The potential to obtain external research funding.

The selected applicant will have a primary appointment in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with the possibility for adjunct appointments in other faculties and membership with relevant institutes. The research environment is multi-disciplinary and prioritizes transdisciplinary research initiatives.
